So, do any of you have to hand in book reports for student portfolios and if so, how do you handle these? And if not, got any good suggestions? my daughter is going in to G4. We did some Evan Moore How To Report on Books worksheets last year to “git er’ done” but I am not interested in doing that this year. It stole a bit of reading joy from her as it imposed reporting fears. I want to handle this better. obviously Charlotte would not be recommending twaddle forms , sigh.

We do not have to do this, so I’m not sure if this will help you.  Can you have her write or record her narrations of her books and include this?  It would be a compilation of all of her narrations, so not a true book report, but it will be obvious that she did read it.  Would that work to fulfill your needs?

We have to do book reports, but not that early. One thing we’ve done when they’ve asked to do book reports because they are seeing what their older siblings are doing is I just type up their dictation, a couple/few paragraphs at a time. I have done it and corrected it as I go, but I’ve also typed them word for word and then we do a grammar/word usage lesson over the next few days. If they had to provide a book report for every book they read, I’d mix it up a bit and have them do different things. Straight narration, answer a question that I pose regarding the book, have them make a list of questions regarding the book, some art work, that sort of thing. There is a great list of narration ideas on this website that I’m sure you could find.

    Blessings,

Another thought occured to me… can she draw her book report?  I mean, have a series of pictures of important (to her) parts of the book?  Would this count?  Could she intersperse pictures in with written narration?

These are really helpful suggestions. I think I had a mental block trying to sort next year out and finding more ways to CM our workload. I think if I do a combo of having her draw and copy out some of her narration, that will be a good report. We did Noeo science last year and DS G1 had many drawings with very little writing in his experiment notes and they were fine with it. DD di lots of drawings in her Noeo work as well. I don’t know why that concept never transferred over in thought, lol.

I sure do appreciate fresh eyes on the matter! Thank you!!!
