  • Where do you keep books that you will use soon or for a specific time frame? My kids keep gettig into the books I want to use at a different time. I love that they love books and the I picked out, but it’s difficult to keep a unit on one book going if they’ve jumped to another.  Do you use a high shelf? Does it not bother you? I’m tryong to figure out the organizational flow on the influx of specific books for each unit.

Right now I’m using a high shelf that is holding our history books (in particular) for next year. Most of the books I planned to use for this school year are on a shelf that is right below that one. And, yes, I do try to keep my from looking at the books that I have planned/scheduled for certain subjects. I figure there are plenty of other books they can read that don’t take away from our “lesson” books.

I store the others in boxes at the moment. I’d love to have bookshelves for the “extras,” but hubby said no more bookshelves. :'( So they can’t get to them. They do have a few shelves of books they can help themselves to anytime, and I have a large variety of topics/fiction/historical eras/etc there.

We have a shelf for off limits books. It holds all our history books for the year plus anything else that is for a later date in the school year. The rest of the books are free reign.

I use a plastic filing box with hanging folders for books that for another time period. I mark the sections with Modules 1-6, and then fill the sections accordingly. I also have another box for seasonal books (spring, summer, fall, and winter). Separating the books in this way makes it really easy to swap out when the time comes.

I keep the two boxes in my closet so that they are easily accessible when I need to get into them, but the books aren’t readily available on a bookshelf.

I keep all our books available at all times.  I shelve them in “units”, so all Ancient stuff it together, etc.  Sometimes they’ll read books I have planned for the next year, sometimes not.  If they do they either enjoy reading it again (or listening to me read it out loud) OR if they can give me a good narration and I know they understood it, I’ll give them an alternate book to read.
