Any sugestions on handicrafts for an 8.5 YO girl?  I have done a lot of crafting in my life and could probably get her started with whatever, but need something she could do pretty much independently after the initial lesson(s).  She has three very active and very curious younger brothers, so things that don’t involve a lot of small pieces are a plus!

Here are things my 8.5yo girl does.  Some involve small pieces.  She has 5 younger brothers and just had to learn to pick up after herself as she went.

Rainbow Loom – bracelets, rings, belts, and more.

Sewing – she does basic things on a sewing machine independently, and with help if it’s more involved. She can do a bit of hand sewing but doesn’t enjoy it yet.

    Sculpey/clay creations, charms, beads.

Pom pom animals (yarn pom poms)

    Loom knitting hats.

    Jewelry making with beads.

    Paper flowers.

    Card making.

    Cooking.

    Origami.

    Drawing.

    Painting.

    Chalk pastels.

    Candlemaking.

    Gardening.

    Photography.

Check out the Klutz series of book/kits too, they are great to get them started on some topics.

I was going to suggest sculpey clay, too.

Also, friendship bracelets, with or without beads

Plastic canvas (use a plastic needle if that’s a concern), counted cross stitch, or embroidery

    A simple weaving loom

    Craft stick creations

Yarn dolls or other soft toys

I think she would like that rainbow loom…small pieces and all…so I’ll look for that.  Thanks for the suggestions.
