Lina.bean and Simple Home – Yup, we need a filter and a softener.  We just moved into this home less than 2 months ago.  It was a foreclosure, so it’s a pick and choose what needs to be done first.  The filter and softener is pretty high on our list!   🙂 But, the water itself is clear – it just leaves an orange tint to everything…including my hair!  Thanks for the suggestion of googling it.  I don’t know why I didn’t think of that!

Well, in winter, I get dry ends. But in the past I have been more on the oily side. So most of the time I do only the vinegar rinse but then I will also do a deep conditioning type treatment when I feel the need (or have the time and energy ; o ). I do know that a lot of people use small amounts of coconut oil every night on the ends of their hair as a leave in conditioner. If I do this to much I look greasy, though. So I only do it as a “supplement” so-to-speak. I also do other homemade, natural treatments on my hair as well and the cumulative effect works quite well! I do think it takes a bit of trial and error as there are so many different hair and skin types, and so different things will work in different ways depending on the person. If your hair is very dry, you may benefit a lot from using coconut oil in a personalized manner. I don’t use any so called “normal” commercialized products on myself or my kids anymore and so I just don’t know how the conditioner used in combo with the bs would work long term as I have no experience to speak to that at all. Sorry.

    laura bora,

You have to much iron in your well water. If you get a perm or if you have straight hair you can run some perm solution in it. Just let it set a few minutes and rinse it out. The water in the sink will be purple. This is the iron coming out. Then, finish up. It will pull it out, however, it will come back because iron coats the hair shaft and penetrates. You could also buy a product from paul mitchell for clorine. It has less of an effect but it will keep it from getting bad. Other than that I don’t know of any other way you can do it. Unless you cut off your hair of course… 🙂

Good luck with your new home and  pray for a water softner or get a reverse osmosis. 🙂

    Tanya,

I didn’t use the vinegar, just baking soda. I’m not sure why your hair reacted with one or the other, or combination? I just lightly scrubbed about a tablespoon onto my scalp before getting into the shower and then rinsed it well. I then followed with a salon quality non-sulfate shampoo and conditioner. My hair did great, I’m sorry you’re having problems. 🙁 Maybe it’s because your hair type is different than mine. I have fairly thick, somewhat curly hair that needs to be washed only every other day to keep it from being too dry.

I have thick brown hair with a natural curl that tends to frizz a little if I’m not careful.  I recently pulled my mid-back length hair in to the usual rubber band only to find myself with scissors in hand cutting off said pony tail at shoulder length!  I have no idea what came over me.  I’ve never cut my own hair in my life.  And guess what …. I LOVE IT.  It’s the best cut I’ve ever had.  Something about the pony tail made it into that so hip bob that is a tiny bit longer in the front than the back.  At almost 39!  It still makes me giggle to think of it.  What mom whacks off their hair like that?!  Of course both kids wanted to try it on their own too.  Ut oh …
