CM says, “that a child should have the habit of reading to himself…” vol 1. pg 227

I have not been able to accompish this with my son age 12.  I know we have to work on this habit with lots of practice and prayer, I don’t know how else to do this. We do not have a TV, we do not have a game system of any kind.  I let him pick his books (with my approval) I choose many good books for him as well and yet unless I am after him, he will not read. He will sit very still for hours if I read. I believe I have done what Charloette says…”shirk the labour of reading to himself”…vol1 pg 228.

Hmm, what about beginning with a set time of day that is “reading time”? We do quiet time and the children must be in their beds, books allowed. Then get stacks of books from the library on topics he’s interested in and hand them over for the time. Try starting a chapter book you think he’ll really enjoy but only read aloud the first chapter or two. Get to a part where he asks you to “please keep reading” and hand it over saying you’re done reading it period, but he’s welcome to finish it. 😉 Sometimes that’s all it takes, getting them involved in the story before turning it over to them.

Allow an extra half hour awake in bed at night, if (and only if) they are reading
