We have a little man-made pond in our yard and there are tadpoles in it. The kids love looking at them, and I’d like to maybe bring a couple inside if it’s not too difficult. Any tips? Do I need a big space? Can I use a mason jar? I have a couple quart size ones. I think I read somewhere about feeding them lettuce. Will they hop away?
Karen SmithModeratorWe used the information on the Missouri Conservation website when we raised tadpoles years ago.
RobinPParticipantOh boy…may I offer one word of caution??? When my oldest son was six year old and in his K year, we raised two tadpoles. So fun. He named them Rib and It. My son is now almost 23 years old AND THEY ARE STILL ALIVE!!!!!!! He will be leaving for another college in August and just commented yesterday that WHO WOULD,HAVE THOUGHT HE WOULD BE TAKING THOSE FROGS WITH HIM!!! LOL! So just keep in mind you may be looking at a long-term commitment. 🙂
mama_nicklesParticipantRobinP-That’s hilarious and amazing! I was just envisioning watching them for a few weeks/months and putting them back in the pond. 🙂
RobinPParticipantI’m not sure what mind these are but seems like I remember someone telling us this species wouldn’t survive and we just didn’t have the heart to turn them out if they weren’t going to make it. We might have thought otherwise had we known. 🙂 It is fun, though. Enjoy.
