I really like the focus of Winston Grammar. It has worked well for us during the last few months.

Might anyone recommend a similarly focused program for punctuation and mechanics for DS8 and DS10? I do address these informally through written narration and also use Evan-Moor worksheets that offer practice but not instruction.

I have been considering Junior Analytical Grammar, followed by Junior Analytical Mechanics, after we complete Winston. I haven’t seen many reviews of the Junior Analytical Mechanics course, though. I suppose I could also consider Easy Grammar, as well.

    Any thoughts? Thanks!

Must not be a lot of people using JAG? I do think it is recommended in the free curriculum guide, but maybe that is just AG. Not sure.

Anyway I haven’t used either one, but I have use Easy Grammar with both of my older boys and getting ready to start my third oldest boy on it. I obviously can’t compare it to AG/JAG for you but I do really like Easy Grammar… I don’t like to stress about finishing all 180 lessons in one year so we spread it out.

Of course it is very different from the color coded clue cards etc in Winston … but Winston provides a good foundation.

    Hope something in here helps.

There is an Advanced Winston Grammar as well. I have used JAG and AG and though they have their good points, they are pretty tedious after one or two lessons. I actually wrote a review for AG that should still be on the  TOS review site. If I were to choose one, I would go with AG over JAG. Its just a LOT for a youngster to get through and it doesn’t cover anything better than Winston does. I like the way AG is broken up over several years, and the students just do a semester at the beginning of the year, then a review sheet the first week of every month. As far as a structured grammar course goes, it certainly covers all the bases. Easy Grammar has about half the number of sentences on each page but I guess the downside is you take the whole year to finish it. Winston is hands down my favorite, and if your kids are kinestetic and like to touch and move things, Winston will fit that bill as well. The Advanced Winston is more of the same.
