Do you keep scores during the year for the kids math?  Do you just analyze it and decide if they need to work on it longer?  My state does not require grades or test scores of any kind for homeschooling, but Im having troubles deciding if I should keep a grade book or not for my own records.

Depends on your kids ages. For elementary/jr high, I would say grades are unneccesary. I pretty much know what they are scoring but don’t write it down. The scores and what they are missing just tell me where they are still struggling and need more practice. I’ve taken them out of their math programs at times to focus on one area with games/activities before. Then put them back in once they get the concept.

For high school, I do keep grades. Makes it easier for the transcript.

    Hi,

Like Rebecca, until highschool we do not keep grades for math. In the younger grades we make sure they master all their math problems every time – no reason to not get an A. When they miss a problem, we have them go over it again until they see their error & correct it. This way we know they are really “getting it” before moving on. My boys love the feeling of knowing they’ve conquered every math problem Wink. I was inspired for 100% mastery by Joanne Calderwood http://www.urthemom.com/Mastery.html

    Blessings to you! ~ Heather

I’ve been using MEP…. so far there have only been about 3 or 4 tests…. I’ve noted the marks down my son got on them.  For everyday work, I don’t keep marks.
