I’m looking at using the Getty Dubay Handwriting series with our ds.  He will be 6-years old in April, but we wouldn’t be starting until fall.  I am looking for feedback from anyone who’s used the program.  What was your experience?  Did you use it with boys?  What age did you start?  Any feedback is appreciated.  Thanks so much, Melissa

    Hi Melissa,

I have used this program with all 5 of my children.  Our oldest is our only son, and he has some of the best writing.  When he would write up display items for our hs group’s project day, several of the adults would comment that his handwriting was so beautiful.  Now that he is 21, he writes much faster, but even still, it is legible and very neat.

Personally, I really like the nice clean lines that the writing has.  There isn’t any fuss and muss that the children need to worry about or get distracted with while writing.  The only concern that you might have is that some of the letters are sufficiently different looking from traditional cursive that you will probably want to aquaint your child with the letters so they recognize them if the see them written that way.  That’s all that I did with mine, any way.  Overall this program gets ***** from me. 🙂

I also like this style of writing for my children. The only thing I have noticed is that you are limited in using some workbook’s let’s say like Explode the Code. Not that CM is about work books anyway but it is still something I noticed. My son is just starting work book D of this series and it is neat to see how easy it is for him to now incorporate all that he learned in italics printing (sorry I know there is proper terminology for all this)to now just learning the connecting lines to make it an italic’s handwriting. I also used Penny Gardner’s Italics because I found my children had a hard time writing so large with book A and book B. Every child is different though and I have heard that a lot start much larger because it is easier for them. So as I said I have enjoyed seeing my children use this and I really like that they don’t have change styles but continue learning to build on everything in their printing/writing skills.

    Kim.
