A reader just shared that her 12yo daughter is enjoying a free online typing program called Typing Web and wanted to let you all know about it. (She is a bit shy about posting on the forum.)
momof3ParticipantThank you!
JennNCParticipantWe really like that program much better than anything else we’ve tried. 🙂
petitemomParticipantJenn you are pretty convincing! We have been using this program for a while and was just questioning if my kids would learn more w/something else. I am reading on other treads that some people have the same issues w/other programs though so might not be worth it!?! Just feel like they are not really progressing.
chocodogParticipantcool! I will have to check it out! Thanks!
revwifeParticipantThanks for sharing!
JennNCParticipantpetitemom, in eleven years of homeschooling I’ve never found a typing program I like better… BUT no matter how you approach it, learning to type is work. I think of it a lot like drilling math facts. The kids really need to do it, but it is very unlikely that they are going to love the process, if you know what I mean.
I do find that my boys don’t progress well with typing if they are not doing it very regularly (I schedule it five days a week and sometimes even six if I have a kid who is not progressing) but for short periods of time. I think it is important that they know the time will be very short, because it really does require a high level of concentration. I expect them to work hard for those few minutes daily.
Also they do better if I am in the room with them, they stay more focused that way.
I really like the logical progression of the lessons, and the fact that after you’ve used TypingWeb for a while, it generates lessons that are specific to your own personal trouble spots. This has been a useful feature for my kids.
That’s just been our experience though… others might have a different take on it. 🙂
~Jenn
momof3ParticipantWe just tried it and ds really like it. I liked it as well, better than Mavis Beacon so far!
BookwormParticipantWe use this and also a game site called freetypinggame.net
memomo7ParticipantSonya, thank you for posting this link! I think it might be just what we’ve been looking for!
@Jenn, do you use the free edition with ads or did you pay for a subscription without ads and a few extra exercises?
petitemomParticipantthanks Jenn, I probably have to work on that!!
JennNCParticipantmemomo7, I use the free edition… but I’d pay for the ad-free version in a heartbeat if the ads became a distraction to my kids. The price is really reasonable. 🙂
yunoParticipantMy boys are 8 and 9. What ages would you recommend to start Typing Web? I did not learn to type until my sophmore year of high school and ended the semester at 75 words per minute. That was before the internet age though. Is it recommended we start our young ones earlier? I have read that it will take much longer than 1 semester to reach a fast pace though. Thoughts?
deenamathewParticipantMy cousin son also startesd typing at the age of 8. Thanks for sharing the link.
