We have Speaking German with Miss Mason and François but never got past the first lesson… due to life.  I know that the series is well-liked here on the SCM forums, but does it actually work?  Meaning, is it a viable way to actually learn a language, other than just taking it for exposure or for a credit…  Very hard to find info about it from a practical standpoint.

I’ve been toying with doing Spanish which would be a lot more practical where we live, but just can’t imagine teaching it (or any language!) to someone who struggles immensely with their own mother tongue, (except for speaking it, lol).

We’ve been using and love Flip-flop Spanish. It has you speaking multiple simple but usable sentences right from the first lesson and you don’t need to read to be able to use it. It’s all with picture flashcards that you rearrange again and again to make new sentences. She offers suggestions for writing for older students but it’s optional. Grammar is kept simple and is introduced slowly. Señora Gose is a great teacher!
