Right now my dd 12 is using 7th grade CLE, this is our second year with CLE math and it is working well for us.  I was getting ready to order her 8th grade math, but when I looked at the samples, it looked like most of it was repeated from what she learned in 7th grade.  Then I looked at 9th grade, and thought it looked repeated, maybe difficult problems.  But basically the same.

Just wanted to know if anyone else quit using CLE in later years because of that.  I know math repeats and most just gets harder but I’d rather her not learn to draw congruent angles in 8th grade when she has done it in 7th.

I’m guessing she could take the diagnostic test and perhaps she would “skip” the 8th grade books.  Anyway, I would love to hear from someone who has used or is using CLE math in upper middle or high school grades.

I’d hate to buy the books while I’m unsure.  Sure wish I could have all the lightunits in my hands to look through. 🙂  I hope that made sense.

    Thanks,Paula

I am following this because I have a similar question.  When I look at the scope and sequence for grades 6 – 8, it looks like much is repeated.  When I asked the CLE rep. when “pre-algebra” began, he said there is some algebra sprinkled into grades 5-8.  I am considering skipping some.

It would be nice to have them in hand.  There are pdf samples of each LU on their website.  Or you could order a teacher’s guide and then order certain light units based on seeing the smaller duplicates with answers in the teacher’s guide.  Then you could cover one or two lessons from a skipped LU that may be new material.

I also want to mention the importance of oral mental math which is a CM method we recently added to CLE lessons for 10 minutes 3-4 days per week.  I first read about it in Rachel’s math book sold here at SCM.

CLE is a spiral program, which means it teaches incrementally and repeats often to build on itself. Algebra concepts are introduced as early as 200/300 and then are just slowly built upon. Also, the first light unit of every grade, is a review of the previous year’s work. So, if you really want to get a feel for what “new” material will be taught, look at the samples of light units 5-10.

Also, they have a scope/sequence on their website that you can look at to see exactly what is taught. Their 800 level is considered pre-Algebra.

I have used CLE math for 4 years and will continue using it through 8th grade.  Their high school levels have not been revised to Sunrise materials yet.  If they have not been revised by the time my oldest is in 9th, we will probably transition to Saxon for high school math.  Using CLE through 8th grade will give your child a very strong foundation for whatever Algebra program you choose.

Thanks, I think I’ll order the teachers guide and look over the worksheets.  We will probably skip the first couple of light units since most are review from the previous grade.  Thanks for the advice about Saxon.  I will look into that as well.  I wasn’t sure where to go next if we did not continue on with CLE but I’ll check Saxon.

    Thanks everybody
