Any ideas for teaching Anatomy for a high schooler?  I have a workbook and book that someone gave me that does not necessarily go along w/CM approach.  I want her to learn stuff and not just memorize things.  I am new to CM so this one is tough for me!  Any tips?

Apologia Science’s Advanced Biology?  You can see a sample on their website:

Absolutely Apologia! The Advanced Bio is really fabulous. I ask my son questions about the body ALL the time. He really really “learned stuff”. I could not believe how much. They have to have taken the first Bio course and Algebra, I think. My son wrote a 10 page paper about how the skin defends the body the year after he used the course. I was astounded at the level of understanding he had. It was like a professional paper. It has been at least two years since he took it and he will always be our resident expert on the body.

Can you tell I love Apologia?

If you want an in-depth study, go with Apologia. If you want more of an interesting overview, you might check out The Way We Work by David Macaulay.

Sonya, that is a great book – we used that as my daughters did not want to do the advanced bio course, they did Apologia Bio and then one did Apologia Marine Bio and the other a college level Equine Science.  Because they had only the most basic book for anatomy when they were younger we used the book you mentioned and then added Fearfully and Wonderfully made which they are reading again this year as a refresher and they enjoyed both.  They do not intend to study science in college except the mandatory courses, one will go into political science and the other into something in the writing field, journalism maybe – if she is not well enough to ride and make her career there.  Thanks for recommending that book because those who don’t want Apologia (which is excellent but too much for some) would be pleased with Macaulay’s book.

Thanks for the tips!  I used Apologia for General Science and it was okay but it did not have the CM feel that I was searching for.  The Adv Bio could be better though:)

Sonya – I did reserve a copy of the The Way We Work at our library that we plan to pick up tomorrow to try!

    Thanks again everyone!!
