I’ve become more and more interested in both these topics and would love to hear what your favorite books on these subjects are.  If you could only buy one book (on each topic), what would it be?

I’ve seen The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy… I’m really wanting to incorporate these and natural remedies into our life.

For country life, things like chickens, baking, gardening…the whole nine yards.  Also any magazine/newsletters would be great too.  It seems like I have always gotten BHG and Southern Living, but lately I just don’t feel that they fit who I am and who I want to become.  But I love getting in magazines, love taking them to read at doctor’s visits and any really any wait time…

The Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery. It has a subtitle: An Old Fashioned Recipe Book. It is so much more than that. It tells everything you need to know about country life. I think I might have gotten it at LovetoLearn.net, but I’m not sure. It’s amazing.

Our favorite books about the country life:

    The Backyard Homestead

    Chickens in Your Backyard

    The Vegetable Gardener’s Bible

One of my favorite magazines is GRIT

If you would enjoy agricultural essays, Wendall Berry and Gene Logsdon are great!  If you want to get into REAL food issues, I love this book by Nina Planck.

I second the Encyclopedia of Country Living.  EXCELLENT book.  I’ve only borrowed it from the library, but someday soon I hope to buy it.  🙂  We also get Countryside Magazine and LOVE it.  They have had a series on essential oils the past 2 issues, with more to come (see this link and look down to Homestead Health about 3/4 of the way down – the article isn’t online, but it does have the table of contents).  If you are looking for a forum, we love Homesteading Today’s (I am mateosbaby on there, and my hubby is Mateo1041).  Another great book is The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Self-Sufficient Living by Jerome D. Belanger.  In fact, Countryside Magazine has a nice bookstore online with tons of great books about pretty much every subject you could possibly be interested in.  🙂

Hmm, is it obvious this is a subject that is near and dear to my heart?  Wink  Hope these help!

We are pretty hard core homesteaders – butcher our own pigs, chickens, and rabbits, make lard, sell veggies, have an outhouse (and indoor plumbing, too LOL) and all the million other day to day things that go along with this type of country life.  I wholeheartedly agree with the above recommendations of The Encyclopedia of Country Living (if you buy one book about the mechanics of farm life it should be this one), Countryside Magazine, and their forum Homesteading Today.  All of these have been indispensable resources for me.

I’d like to offer one more, to show the fun and joyful side of farm living – where ever you are, you can still be a farmgirl.  Mary Jane’s Farm magazine and forum http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/ and http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/ .  The magazine is wonderful.

They even have a badge program for kids and adults (fun to earn badges!), like girl scouts.  This is a very home school friendly environment, she has featured homeschoolers in her books and magazine often, and there are lots of homeschoolers on the forum.

    Enjoy!

Gem, thanks for the new site and forum.  Love them!  They look great!  Out of curiosity, who are you on Homesteading Today’s forum?  You can PM me if you want, my mind just likes to “know” how people are connected throughout the internet so I know in my head that it’s the same person.  😛  It’s a weird quirk of mine, I guess.

    Thanks, all!

Gem, love the way God confirms things.  I bought my first issue of Mary Jane’s Farm just 2 weeks ago!  I loved it, that’s what got me thinking there had to be more out there like it.  I’m going to go explore the site some more, looks fun!  We’re kind of a suburban area, would love to be rural or ranch, so I do need farming-lite!  LOL

We have officially listed our house on the market, hoping to sell it and be able to more a little more rural.  I would LOVE a ranch, but not too many of those around here…

One of my favorite websites is keepingafamilycow.com.  Yes it’s about cows (of which we have 4) but there are forums for just about everything homesteading.
