  • It is important for kids to get out and socialize. We’re lucky to be from a large family where everyone’s in the same town. so school going and non school going cousins can socialize with each other. My friend, however, lives and homeschools in another state. She sends her kids for swimming classes and then signed them up for a baseball club. If these are too expensive, you could just all start your own family health club and go on walks on the weekend, go camping, do some yoga etc.

Sarah pretty much summed up CBS! Not sure about BSF, but if it’s the same study that others in my group had talked about CBS is definitely far less strict about attendance and homework. They tend to be pretty lenient with me seeing I have either had a baby or was expecting my next little one all the years I have attended. This year I really hope to fully engage myself, especially since my oldest is starting in the Primary class and will have homework of his own. The kids love it. We have a bit of a drive to get there (almost an hour) so they aren’t fans of that, or having to be woke up to get there, but once we’re there they find their friends have have a blast.

We did t-ball for one season and it was great, the second season we quit after the first game because the whole atmosphere changed – it went from a fun, laid back family ordeal to parents and coaches screaming and yelling, strict rules, etc.

Oh, and my son fishes. The other reason we stopped t-ball (his choice, when we told him he would have to miss a few tournaments). He is an “honorary member” of DH’s bass club and does tournaments each month with him plus a legacy series in the spring. His goal in life is to become a pro fisherman. It’s definitely not peer interactions in terms of kids his own age, but he is exposed to a lot of people of various ages and stages in life.

    I have four kids – dd13, ds10, dd7, and ds almost 5.

DD13 – sings w/ Youth band and has practice every other week for 1 hour Mon. & Wed. evenings; attends youth group Wednesday evenings 1 hr.; rides horses 1 day 3.5 hours.

DD7 – rides horses 1 day per week 3.5 hours (same time as sister); piano 30m once per week (same time as brother)

DS10 – golf lesson 1 day per week 45 min; plays golf 2-3 days per week depending upon other commitments 2.5-3 hrs; takes piano 30 min once per week; plays fall and spring baseball – 1 practice and 1 game per week about 2.5 hours each; This son excels in all sports and it’s where his bent in life lies.

    DS almost 5 – starting T-ball this fall – 2.5 hrs Sat.

I like sports, I think they can be extrememly positive influences. My girls benefit in numberous ways from riding. My oldest son would be stifled without sports.

Riding lessons – that’s something that I need to keep in mind for the future! My three older ones (7, 5, 3) were planning out our family farm yesterday decked out in boots, jeans, and either “cowboy” (plaid button up) or John Deere shirts (sitting on the railing watching family members bale hay). They are begging for a horse…

We tried to sell our home to buy a 9 acre farm with barn and arena right in the middle of the city that friends are selling. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, we didn’t sell. But, our girls are content to ride. Dd13 has been riding for 9 years and dd7 for 2. They would love to ride more often, but it’s a trek and I like being home.

My kids participate in a few extra-curricular activities each week, like AWANA, youth group, and flag football. I don’t want to be out running around too much each week and I don’t want to totally be house-bound, so a couple of activities each week is just right for us *and* leaves room/flexibility for field trips, too. This amount of balance works well for us. 🙂

We’re also on the calm end of extra-curricular activities.  I prefer it that way.

We do homeschool group once a month; a field trip about 4or 5 times per year; GoodNewsClub (sort of like Awana) every Wed. night; American Girl Club at the library once a month; and that’s about it!

But for right now, it’s good.
