The CM method looks great and I really want to take the plunge and get out of the workbook rut. However, I have several questions and would appreciate all the help I can get.
I have a ds, 9, third grade. THe living books recommended for science look great for him. I’m wondering if using only the living books and narrating from them are enough. Also, are there any living books for chemistry or physics?
I am not a strong writer so I he is using a writing curriculum. Would using only written narrations from what he reads be enough to make him a strong writer?
I would appreciate any suggestions on this. Thanks
As far as writing goes, written narrations would be the main tool to use for composition, but your child would need some guidance along the way. He probably won’t improve automatically unless you give him some pointers on the mechanics and word choice and such as he writes. It doesn’t have to be elaborate; one or two points at a time would be sufficient. This older discussion may give you more ideas.
Having said that, several moms on this forum do use a writing curriculum and just try to tweak it to be more CM friendly, and less formulaic, in its methods.
If you have not read any of Charlotte Mason’s books, that might be a good place to start. To really be able to put CM’s method’s into practice it would be helpful to understand the “why” and not only the “how”. The more I understand what CM taught, the more I can trust that her philosophy is correct and it’s “enough”.
I agree with Alice. I am reading Home Education by Charlotte Mason right now and it is beyong helpful. She is a wise woman and her philosophies are timeless. I had already read every book ABOUT Charlotte Mason philosophy, but I found none of it as endearing as reading her actual words. Although, Karen Andreola’s book was very inspirational as well.
