My son (4 1/2) has a Little Touch Leap Pad (which is no longer being produced by Leap Frog). It’s geared toward children up to 3 years old, but he still enjoys it. I have thought about replacing it with something more suitable to his age, but am really uneducated in what’s out there as far as electronic educational games are concerned. I’m also wondering if there are any opinions against these types of things for kids. I’m open and would love to just get some feedback on this. Also would love any ideas for good computer games for kids.

    Thanks!

While I do try to limit its use, my 6yo has loved his Leapster, the handheld game.  And now my 6yo son we just brought home from China is playing it.   We spend a lot of time in the van on certain days so it has been handy for those times.  If you choose your games carefully it can help reinforce things you’re teaching, especially math drill.

I second the Leapster.  We have 2 (with 6 kids) and we also only pick the games that teach.  They have many that work on ABC, phonics, spelling, and math.  I actually wish there was somthing simular for older kids with multiplacation and such.

We had a phonics pad from GeoSafari. It didn’t go over well. I don’t have any electronic games now. They do enjoy Starfall and it’s free. They also like sesame street and playhouse Disney games online. They don’t watch television, so we use the computer sparingly. If it were up to me, there would be no computer time. As it is, it’s very limited. We have really struggled here because that is all they want to do. There is no computer on until school is done and they have been outside for a while. It’s so hard!
