I was just curious if anyone has any suggestions for good educational videos for my 5yo on Netflix streaming. I looked through the national geographic and my ds LOVED one about a dinasour fossil finding (which I found boring, but I allowed him to watch it cuz he was intriqued by it), only the national geographic talk about dinasours living billions of years ago, and that conflicts with the biblical creation story which we plan to teach. My ds is very interested in the solar system and dinasours especially.

My son watched one called something like “Planets”… I’m sure it used old-earth science though. I didn’t get to see it, so I can’t tell you much. (My son is 7 and loves space)

Netflix has the worst search features! I usually search amazon or some other source with my keywords, and when I find a video I like the looks of, I type that specific thing into netflix and see if it shows up. Sometimes their suggestions are good, but usually not so much…
I second the Imax suggestion – for solar system I have a History Channel series called “The Universe” in my streaming cue that we have watched several seasons of, also a BBC series “The Planets” – I would describe us as a secular science family, so I really couldn’t say how you will feel about the science in any of these movies, a lot of them do talk about the age of the universe. Preview them, I guess? Same with the Walking with Dinosaurs series – but this may be too intense for a 5yo. anyway. Lots of eating other dinosaurs LOL.
I like a lot of the travel type videos for geography. We loved Nat Geographic’s Amazing Planet. Also Discovery Atlas: Uncovering Earth. All the episodes of Liberty’s Kids are available for American History, if you like that kind of thing.
I guess that bad search engine aside, Netflix has been a wonderful resource for us, and I am trying to decide whether to cancel my dvd option due to the new price increase. Just switching to redbox (that is what everyone I know is doing) doesn’t really do me any good, because I never order new releases – just older or obscure movies that aren’t available streaming.

Oh btw I am thinking of starting Michael Palin’s Around the World in 80 days series – but need to preview a couple episodes first. I remember liking this when it was on TV ages ago.

Not necessarily along his interests but we have enjoyed (and I have watched and approved of):
Jeff Corwin (nature/animals)
Beakman’s World (all sorts of science topics/experiments)
Word World (early reading)
Super Why (early reading)
Leap Frog (math, reading, phonics, etc)
Liberty’s Kids (American history)
He’s too young for Mythbusters but we use that for science sometimes too. There are a lot of “documentaries” listed, but I haven’t watched them so can’t tell you whether they’re okay or not.

he may not be too young for mythbusters… my 7yo loved them even 2 years ago when he was 5. Now almost everytime he watches it, he recreates an experiment in Lego! (including a pretty much working rube-goldberg machine they did one episode…. his couldn’t do all the things they did because of the science they used…. but it had all the parts to it…

If you are looking for top quality creation science videos – check out the Moody Science DVD’s, Vision Forum website, or Answers in Genesis.
We did also find a pretty good biography about the famous hymn writer, Fanny Crosby, on Netflix. Hope this helps!

Thanks again guys, these are great suggestions. Many I have never heard of, but I’m just now entering the world of “school aged” parenting………funny when my ds was a baby 5 years ago I went to a moms meeting and they had a game of which mom could match the most kids shows with a short song segment……..I failed miserably only knowning the theme songs for Sesame st. and Veggie Tales (now I know every theme song for every non-ADHDish cartoon….as I don’t like hyperactive cartoons)……….NOW, 5 years later I’m entering your world of IMAX, Liberty Kids, BBC series, and other new-to-me shows, LOL. Thanks for getting me off to a good start ;).

My son LOVES dinosaurs. We watched on Netflix Dinosaurs vs. Dragons, or something like that, I think it was by Answers in Genesis. It was more for an older audiance, but ds still loved to watch it. I recently ordered from christianbook.com a dvd call T.R.U.T.H. about Dinosaurs for $7.97 on sale. I think your ds would really like it.

Also, one of the episodes of the Duggers in 17 and Counting or 18 and Counting – they go to the Creation Museum near Cincinnati, OH. ds loved that one!
