I’m pritty sure my daughter has this. she is almost 10 and has a hard time with spelling, her handwriting is written with a mixture of upper and lower case letters in each word all differing in size, and she holds her pencil in a fist like manner and complains about her hand hurting. When she was in public school they told me she had dyslexia based on the fact that she had some letter reversals. she does not but still reverses her letters from time to time but reads just fine and can narrate perfectly.

I have ordered handwriting without tears cursive for her. Are there any exercises I can have her do to help with her pencil grip. She is very embarrassed about her handwriting. She has to write things at church and hates it. My heart is breaking for her. I have no idea what to do to help her.

I have been using this pencil grip with my youngest for years now. It’s soft and works for both L- and R-handed writers. Would something like that help to gently reform her grip? She might take her own pencils (with grips) to other locations or activities where she will be required to write.

Would it help to have a heart-to-heart talk with her teacher at church and see if she could give her answers orally instead of writing them? Or would that bring too much attention her way and embarrass her more?
