  • I never knew much about the Duggars until I read their new book, A Love That Multiplies. It is a wonderful book for any family to read, especially homeschool moms. I am encouraged by reading about Michelle revealing how she has learned to resolve anger biblically, with herself as well as her children. Such a great reminder for all of us who teach children at home especially! 🙂 Even my husband loves this book!

    I highly recommend it!!

I was thinking of buying this book with some of my birthday money. Now I definitely will. Thanks for the recommendation!

I missed this post before. I just recently heard about the beloved Duggar Family. What an inspiration to us homeschooling moms and those with large families! We’ve been watching their series “17 and Counting” on Netflix and have enjoyed it immensely – dc find their family fascinating! I also put a copy of “A Love that Mulitiplies” on hold at our library; Can’t wait to read it. Anyone else encouraged by this conservative, Christian, homeschooling, large family?  Anyone else read the book or watched the series (which I believe is now 19 & Counting)? We just downloaded their laundry soap recipe and plan on making our first batch this weekend Laughing. God Bless ~ Heather

We are big fans and have been very encouraged by both their show and the book. 🙂

I’ve read both their books and enjoyed them. We also own all the seasons of DVDs that they have released so far. I actually bought one season and saved it for labor and delivery with baby #6 – absolutely hilarious to the nurses, but hey, whatever relaxes me, right?

My children enjoy the show too, so we watch one as a family here and there.

Yes – resolving anger biblically – please share!!

I have this on my list of books to read, but it is not at my library and is not in my budget right now, so it may be a while.

I’m eager to hear what Michelle Duggar has to say on the matter, but I’d also like to jump in on that myself.  I think I’ll leave this thread for more Duggar-appreciation and Simple Home’s reply…..if I don’t fall asleep first, I’ll start a new thread on resolving anger biblically!

Okay, now Sue’s post on resolving anger Biblically makes more sense to me.

We have also watched the Duggers on Netflix. I have watched the dvd of Tea with Michelle by Vision Forum, which a friend of mine has. One thing I really remember from that, which I have tried and should do more of: sing praise and worship songs when struggling. Her song was, “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” It is these same words repeated to the song’s rhythm which I had heard somewhere before. So one day I was feeling angry, but then beyond angry almost hopeless and I began to sing that and tears filled my eyes and then I could cope again. My young dc thought it a little odd, but then commented, “hey, mom, that sounds nice.” So I kept singing it until I got my joy back. I hope that made sense.

Thanks for letting us know about the book. My dd loves to watch it with me, but the boys do not. Except they did like the one where they visit the Creation Museum. I think that was on 18 and Counting.

Now I am going to have to see if I can get that book in at the library. It sounds great! I just love their family. I have read their first book and seen a few taped programs. I have only seen her disapline her children a few times on the video. I would really like more in-site on what her philosiphy and Bible verses are in the heat of the moment. How to handle those tough squabbles. What about lying? ect….   I love her soft tone. It doesn’t seem to work for me. I sure wish I could grasp that and need more help. Hey, maybe there’s a new thread for this. LOL.

Without being too wordy, it would be wise to suggest that moms should pray and seek patience through the Lord for anger issues.

First, Michelle never said that using a soft voice will solve the problem. She basically said that practicing and getting into the habit of a soft answer (which the Bible says) is the way to calm herself before applying discipline. Sometimes it may help to have the child go and sit somewhere while the mom gets a handle on her own emotions. Then the discipline can be applied appropriately. This is NOT easy and requires alot of practice, and we all get practice opportunities. Wink

Michelle teaches during school time certain bible passages for character training, including resolving sibling squabbles. For the older ones, she encourages them to apply these principles in their own lives. In the book she gives an example of her kids’ argument and how to show them to handle it. After doing this, she expects them to work out future arguments on their own, and if it’s brought to mom, it will be no fun. 🙂

I encourage those interested to buy or find the book via library. The Duggars go into more details. Although I don’t do everything the way Michelle does, it is good to find nuggets of God’s wisdom that personally speak to me.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for posting about the book. I’ve been wanting to read it – I really enjoyed their first one.  I just read that they are expecting their 20th child!

I know this verse was already mentioned, but my favorite scripture on how to deal with anger biblically is Proverbs 15:1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

    Clarkes Commentary says

A soft answer – Gentleness will often disarm the most furious, where positive derangement has not taken place; one angry word will always beget another, for the disposition of one spirit always begets its own likeness in another: thus kindness produces kindness, and rage produces rage.

I have had to work on this one. Silly me….for years I always looked at this verse to turn away wrath in my children, but indeed it was to turn away the wrath that would arise in my own heart, when angry. When I practice giving a gentle answer to my boys (while my otherwise sinful nature wants to give a harsh word), I find my own anger subsiding. Gods Word is truly amazing!!

Can’t wait, I just received notice that A Love that Multiplies awaits me at the library Laughing!

    Blessings, Heather
