Hi! Just wondering if there are some opinions out there on Dr. James Dobson and his many parenting books, particularly The New Strong Willed Child. I have read nothing in this arena, but thinking I’d like to pick something up to give DH and I some coaching and guidance on DS9, who has been making ‘NO’ a more frequent response than I care for lately! I’m hoping to find a resource that will give us some new and different ideas on discipline strategies (before his recent little experiments with testing disobedience become a real problem for us).
I’m looking at The New Strong Willed Child in particular because it can be purchased as an audio book; DH likes audio books in the car during his commute to work.
Any suggestions welcome!
KaylaParticipantI have not read that one. But I gave read Bringing Up Boys, and Bringing Up Girls. Both were excellent.
Alicia HartParticipantI love anything by Dobson….Love and Logic books have worked well with us too as well as Laying Down the Rails, an SCM book.
Wings2flyParticipantFor some different ideas, I suggest Gary Chapman’s Five Love Languages of Children (and/or Teens). It has helped me learn to do things better as a parent to get a better response from my children and to show love in different ways that are more meaningful to them. It is availale in print, kindle, and audio.
mrsmccardellParticipantI just bought his book “The New Strong-Willed Child” and it looks great. I scanned a few pages in different chapters and already felt like I had some ideas to try. Hubby and I are going to read together so just waiting to get started.
KaylaParticipantI second the “five love languages of children”. I have also found just asking my kids what makes them feel loved, I always get great answers.
Doug SmithKeymasterYou might also like to take a look at Hal and Melanie Young’s Raising Real Men. Karen and I highly recommend it. They have a free sample chapter on their website.
MonicaParticipantI find the books by Meg Meeker very good.
6boys1girlParticipantI second the Raising Real Men. Best book I’ve ever read about raising boys (we have 6)!
jill smithParticipantLove bring up boys/ girls. Dobson has been around for a long time and supports homeschooling. I remember when my mother read the first bringing up boys. Really help with my brother who had add/ adhd. No meds were needed just training. I highly recommend his books.
AngelinaParticipantThanks to all of you for the excellent suggestions!
NinaParticipantI’m gonna have to break out and dust off my Bringing up Boys book now. Thanks 🙂
