    I found some SUPER cheap deals from our local library sale and got some good titles, however some of the books I picked up even though I was unsure of them at the time just because I did not want to miss one if it was good because the prices were so incredible. I was hoping some of you could tell me if you know of them, have read them, etc. I’d like to know if I should keep or get rid of.

    -Onion John (by Joseph Krumgold) it won a Newbery Medal if that is something useful.

    -Jeffrey Strangeways (by Jill Murphy)

    – The Squire’s Tale (by Gerald Morris)

    – Incredible Jumbo (by Barbara Smucker)

    – Our Only May Amelia (by Jennifer L. Holm) a Newbery Honor book

    If anyone knows these books, can give a review or an opinion, it would be helpful to me. I don’t have a lot of time right now to read them myself as we have moved recently as well as planning next year as well. It would be helpful If I could at least have an easy answer for some of them. I know, I know, I’m trying to take shortcuts! ; )

    Hello – I can offer some info on one of your books…The Squire’s Tale

    My ds12, dd14 and dd16 read this when we were studying the King Arthur time period.  They came across the series at our library.  They tell me there are 10 books in the series.  The Squire’s Tale is possibly the first book.  It’s about the King Arthur time, but written from a squire’s perspective.  My dc tell me that the books are fun to read…probably more “escape” reading books than educational.  Also, they tell me the “d” word was used just a few times in the whole series.

    Hope this helps! – from a mom who can’t possibly read EVERYTHING my children read.  🙂

    Our Only May Amelia is one my dd9 has read. She read it last year or maybe the year before that. If I remember right, it’s one that I should have read beforehand but didn’t and ended up regretting it.

    Time period is “when Hawaii was still called the Sandwich Islands”, according to dd9. A few questionable things were (in dd9’s words) “when there were guys who wanted to marry Indian ladies, and then they couldn’t because they couldn’t talk to them, so they hanged themselves because they were so mad at themselves for falling in love with Indians.” And, “when May’s mom has all these boys and then finally has another girl baby and they call her ‘Amy” because it’s like May but all mixed up. Anyway, she dies after she’s about two weeks old. So maybe that’s not appropriate for some people.”

    HTH!

    Onion John was great!  My son read it in 4th and it was an easy read but a great story.  Only werid thing that happened was that he consistently narrated on this book calling the character Union John instead of Onion John!  Even my daughter would shout “It’s ONION John!” from the other room when he narrated.

    We like Squire’s Tale. It is great King Arthur stories without the smut found in many versions.

    @Jenni,

    I loved reading your daughter’s take on the book, Our Only May Amelia, especially the part at the end where she notes, “So maybe that’s not appropriate for some people.” She might have a future as a book reviewer for homeschoolers. I’m always looking for good reviews to see if a book is appropriate for our family.

    Maybe we should start a thread where we can post our kids’ reviews of books they’ve read, especially fiction. I simply cannot preread everything my kids read, especially now that they have reached middle school and high school.
