I was just reading a thread about materials to use for High School Logic, which you can read here, and it brought up a question I’d like to throw out to the forum.
Have you added in Logic for your high school student(s) or do you plan to? For those who did or plan to, did/will you start Logic in the middle school years?
missceegeeParticipantYes, I plan to add it. Dd13 read The Fallacy Detective and Joseph Spider and the Fallacy Farm this year. Over the summer, she will likely read The Thinking Toolbox. In high school, I plan to use Classical Academic Press’ materials including The Art of Argument and The Argument Builder.
SueParticipantWould you start a 15yo off with CAP if she’s never read anything like FD or TT before? We only have a little over 2 years to go in high school….
BookwormParticipantWe definitely do. We plan with my youngest on completing all 3 of CAP’s books. Your child would have no problem doing Art of Argument if she’s never done Fallacy Detective. We actually think Art of Argument is EASIER to understand and process than Fallacy Detective. If you only have 2 years, just start with Art of Argument and see how far you get. Anything would be beneficial IMO.
Wings2flyParticipantI plan to add logic at grade 8. For Art of Argument, do you need the teacher guide and DVD?
BookwormParticipantI do NOT have the DVD and can’t see why it would be necessary. The teacher guide is nice. Makes going over the discussions much easier.
missceegeeParticipantWe used The Fallacy Detective as a co-op class. It was a fun and interesting introduction. I do think you could skip right to AoA though.
TailorMadeParticipantThanks for helping all of us to plan logic studies!
