Different Homeschooling Schedule for Christmas

I have recently started homeschooling and my daughter already loves it! I’m doing a year round schedule and would like to take the whole month of December “off” in order to really engage her in the history and activities of Chirstmas. I had seen another mother post something similar (I’m not sure if it was on this forum or another I follow), but I will post what she stated so you have an idea what I mean:

“We do enjoy most of December “off”,though we are still doing crafts (handicrafts), baking (math and reading), reading classic Christmas stories (listening comprehension, narration), writing Christmas cards (handwriting, writing practice, sometimes dicatation), caroling (music) and such.”

Does anyone else do something similar and can offer more activity ideas or suggestions? My daughter is 5 (but loves the academics), so I don’t want to stop the learning all together for the month, I just want to tailor everything toward learning about the holiday.

Congratulations on starting your homeschool journey! We had a fun Christmas themed school week last year the week before and then off the week of Christmas. For Bible I read different picture books on the story of Christ’s birth. We sang the same Christmas hymn each day. We did a Christmas themed craft each day to use as Christmas gifts. Copywork is Scripture based on Christ’s birth. We played math games and baked cookies. Literature and readers were winter or Christmas themed. It was a nice break from our regular routine.

I second the Christmas hymns/carols suggestion! You could fit in some arts appreciation too, with choral or ballet performances of Christmas classics like The Nutcracker or Handel’s Messiah. YouTube is a homeschooler’s best friend 🙂 My kids love the Hallelujah chorus flash mob (YouTube it), it made a nice “attention grabber” for the full piece.

We like to do this…I’m not sure if we can afford the time this year (we’ve gotten off to a slow start).

Last year we spent a bit of time on our 3Rs.  We did a “unit study” of sorts on Christmas around the World using some old Reader’s Digest books.  We also read A Christmas Carol and lots of picture books.  We followed each day by watching the matching portion of Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, which was suprisingly close to the book!  Wink

I’m thinking of making a Jesse Tree this year–We did one several years ago with poster board and paper ornaments.  I’m also hoping to work on some homemade gifts and cookies with the kids.
