Would I just be able to use HA with them, or would I need to stick with SCM with my younger and HA for the older 2? I am trying to simplify, and would really like to keep them all together, if possible.

If I were in your shoes I would go with History Revealed and include the activity book for the youngest. Even though I feel it is best suited for olders there are many who have used it for youngers. You will just not be able to expect them to handle the writing or research as well. You may have to preread the articles and then tell it to your youngers. Or your child may be able to grasp the material quite well, depending on how advanced s/he is.

Could it be used in a more independant fashion? I’m looking at it for years 6, 7, & 8.

For children in those grades it can be used independently after you work with them to help them get in the grove. However, one aspect of the TM is the wonderful discussion questions that are designed to be lead by you. You don’t have to do this to make the program a success if you don’t have the time, but it is only one day out of each unit, and can lead to some wonderful conversations. Also may need to assist with either ordering books your child will want or going to the library if your own personal library doesn’t include ones desired.

Also in case there is any confussion over the name of Diana’s curriculum–

When it first came out it was basically a simple guide  closer in size to BF, and it was called Digging Deeper. Later they revised and GREATLY expanded it, and changed the name to History Alive. In the past few years the Warings teamed up with AiG and the name changed again, this time to History Revealed. There is very little difference between the last two. Mainly format, few more book ideas (includes many AiG now sells), map keys and a few other minor things. I think an audio track or 2 may be different.

Thanks so much, Susie. That actually sounds just about right. I love the idea of having him do some on his own, and then have some time to discuss and even read some with him. I’m not really looking to be completely uninvolved. We’re just wanting him to learn how to study some on his own and get more used to independant work. He hasn’t done much of that so far since he was a bit late to the reading scene.

We’re really stretching him this year using Easy Peasy along side TruthQuest for history, and he’s liking that. But looking ahead I don’t like their world history being all in one year, from ancient all the way to the explorers. The next year picks up early American again.  We really like our history and don’t want to rush through it so much. HR is not quite as spread out as TQ (that would take us through high school), but not near as rushed as EP. And since I’m not sure what he’ll wind up doing for high school, I don’t want to count on being able to finish TQ, much as I’d like to. I think HR might be the answer to my dilemma since it seems to have the God-centered perspective that I love so much about TQ. I’m so glad the OP brought this up.  🙂

    Appreciate your input.

Yes, thank you Susie! You have definitely answered my questions, and then some! One last thing, I have several of the SCM books (History module 3, book of centuries, visit to Europe, Romans study guide, Discovering Doctrine). Do you think I will be able to use them with HA, or would that just be too much? I want to be sure that we have some sort of strong Bible content so it can also count for Bible credit (my umbrella school accepts it as a separate subject), which is why I wonder if HA will be all we need? Does HA also give some geography? Thanks again for your help! Laughing

Jackie, I assume you are thining about going with RRR since you mention teh Roman study guide. If that is the case the Bible content is not as strong because of the time period covered. You start with the book of Acts and then move to a few verses here and there as they apply. This is when the church history kicks in. So, I think that if you want to add Discovering Doctrine it would be a good thing.

The geography in HR guides is 1 map per month. There are several assignments for that one map which involve physical, geo-political, and explore. While they are several assignments they can be done in one day if that is the focus. That may leave time to add Visits to Europe. Really it depends on how much you and yours want to do with HR.

I think the book of the centuries is a great additon. There is a day assigned for timeline in each unit.

Adding History module 3 I don’t know. That may be a bit tricky.

One thing that may help you to see for sure if adding the above will work for you is to download the sample module at http://www.dianawaring.com and try it for free.

Student Manual: “Designed to help your student become a self-motivated, self-directed learner.”

Tongue out I had not seen this overview page. Seeing the teacher guide had me concerned it was another curriculum that must be taught. The more I look at this the more it seems to be just what we’re wanting for ds’ middle school years.

    Thanks again,

Thanks again, Susie! I visited the website and downloaded a sample unit, so I’ll be checking that out. Since I already Discovering Doctrine for my 7th and 9th grade daughters, I am going to keep that and work it in. I also have the Book of Romans Study Guide from SCM as well, so maybe that can work out as well? We did also really like the feel/look of Visits to Europe, so we might keep that as well. I do really like that HA gives examples of how to teach each type of learner, because I have a mixture in my house!

Melissa, I’m so glad that you found this post helpful, just like I have. I hope you find what you need for your family as well. You should also join the sharingdwaring Yahoo email group to learn more about it. I joined over the weekend, and found some great files on there.

Blessings to you all, Jackie in TN

You ladies are very welcome. 🙂

Jackie, I am not familiar with Book of Romans Study Guide from SCM so I don’t feel like I can offer an opinion one way or the other on this one. Sorry.
