Determining current reading level

I am wondering if there is anything online or in print to help determine a child’s current reading level. Some sort of test to give would be okay or just an informal assessment wherein I would make the determination from what I’ve seen in his reading skills.

Some of the subjects taught, such as spelling or grammar, are begun based on age/grade level, but my son is 12yo & mildly autistic. His reading abilities have increased over the past few years, but I’ve kind of lost my sense of where he’s at according to grade level. I think it would be helpful for me to pinpoint where he is so I can choose appropriate science and history books for him for next year, too.

Does anyone know of something I could use for assessment?

    There are two assessments here:

They are just simple assessments but you could start there.

Thanks, Tara. These seem like they would be easy for my son to complete and helpful to me. I noticed further down in the article that there is a link to another free online assessment, and I might have my girls take that one just to see what level it comes up with for them.

In case anyone is wondering, this is the link for that test: http://www.test4free.com/

I have not tried these, but they are on page 37 of HSLDA’s magazine from Sept/Oct. 2011:

I hope those links work and I didn’t make a typo. I know Sonlight has a placement test into their level of readers on their website.

That’s a good idea, Sarah. I hadn’t thought of using placement tests on curriculum websites. I’ll have to look at the other links, too. Thanks.
