I am thinking about using DR with my 8yr. old son. He has had phonics instruction but still not reading. Like the older boys he is a ‘late’ reader. I thought this might help. Has anyone used or will use this with an older child? I know it’s new but thought there might be some reviews or feedback.

    Thanks,

    Linda<><

I use it with my youngest daughter, Linda. She is 13 and has autism and some developmental delays, and just started reading about a year and a half ago. We’re making slow progress, but it’s progress and she seems to like it!

Sounds like a different scenario than you’re dealing with, but thought I’d at least mention it. Smile

    What is DR?

I’m using Reading Reflex…we were seriously speech delayed…but doing better.  And we love it.

Not only that, but I mentioned it to my friend who’s daughter is delayed due to severe epilepsy…and she started using it…she came to a place they couldn’t get past, but the book helped her discover exactly what the development/processiong issue was.  And now they can make progress using materials and ideas for her specific issue.

Another friend looked it up after I told her about it, and she is using it with great success with her reader who was still having some serious problems.  I was just mentioning it to her cause I was excited…I had forgotten she had one that was having issues.  My memory is over full or something!

Just thought I’d mention it.  I grew up on phonics.  I thought it was THE way to go.  I definitely wasn’t going the sight word way…but I had no idea about sound pictures…we LOVE it.  We think it makes so much more sense than phonics!!!  yet it incorporates many sounds and correlates them to pictures!

It was developed as a system to enable both children and adults to read.  It explains everything you need to know and do in one nonconsumable book.

    Thank you, Sonja, very encouraging.

Jo, thank you, I appreciate you sharing Laughing.

I’m going to go ahead try it with Ethan. I watched the video and really think this will help him.

I know every family is different but do you think 20 minutes a day would be okay. I would like to spend more time but my schedule is pretty full (lots of kids who still need mama Surprised).

    Blessings,

    Linda<><

I will be using it with my 8yo (and 5yo) when it arrives.  I know it doesn’t help much because I haven’t used it yet but I just wanted you to know others with your age boys are using it.  Mine is reading some, but needs more instruction still.  I believe it says pre-K to grade 2.  I don’t do grade levels but if you go by PS standards then my 8yo 3rd grader would be reading at more of a beg grade 2 level not grade 3 so I thought it would be ideal, plus I have 4 others that will use it.

It tells you where to start if they don’t know any letters, if they know letter sounds, if they read 3 letter words etc.

Also, lessons should only be 10-15 minutes, so 20 would be more than enough time.

Thanks, hauserfamilyLaughing. It is nice knowing that others are or will use it with an older child. I’m glad he doesn’t have to start from the beginning, that’s great to know!
