Hi There! I am starting my daughter at Level 2 but am running into some questions. What is the Bossy R rule as explained in Level 1? What is the Weird W rule? In Lesson 52 in making y-ending words, how do we explain the different sounds of y as in cry and every? Is there anything else that I missed from Level 1 that would be good to know? Thanks so much!

Activity 10 has an explanation of Bossy R: “when r follows a vowel, it changes the sound of the vowel.” You can emphasize the “bossy” part as much or as little as you want to.

Weird W is introduced in Activity 31. It’s just a fun way of explaining that the w after a vowel affects its sound in the word. Again, you can emphasize the “weird” part as much or as little as you desire.

The y-ending sound can be affected by vowels and number of syllables. At this stage we don’t worry about giving an exhaustive reason or set of rules and exceptions. We’re just introducing the idea that sometimes an ending-y says /i/ and sometimes it says /ee/. The child will usually figure out which makes sense through context.

    Hello,

Unsure if this is the right page to post but here goes.

I am actually seeking advice on which DR level I should purchase for my 5 1/2 year old. She knew her alphabet and most sounds from before she was 4. So last year I decided to gently introduce more especially through games. So she can read and spell a lot of 3 letter and even some 4-letter words. She makes connections when she sees signs or labels. For instance she would see a long word and say “look I can see your name in this part here” or something like “if we change this letter we will get ….word”. Unfortunately I bought the Jolly Phonics home kit, and just realizing how really confusing it can be at times. I took a really good look at the DR samples and was impressed by how clear cut and progressive it seems so:

Question: Should I begin with the level 2 or start with level 1 to ensure a good handle on things and for continuity purposes?

I am beating myself up right now for buying Jolly phonics especially considering I have been doing CM style homeschooling all the time and have purchased numerous resources from your site. JP was expensive so I want to be sure I make the right choice now.

From the details you’ve given, I would get Level 2 for her. Level 2 focuses on building words in the same way your daughter is already doing. Because she recognizes some words already, feel free to skip some lessons if she already knows the words in that lesson.
