How do you help develop critical thinking and good problem solving skills in your kids? I am not talking just academics, but in life as well. Maybe street smarts is a good way to put the real life part of it. Our almost 16 year old is smart academically, but not always so when real life hands him a problem and he has to work through it quickly. He kind of just shuts down and we are not sure how to help him in that area.

Lots of practice. One Facebook I follow HR Mom. I think that’s her name. She worked in HR and gives tips for parents to prepare their teens.  She gives a lot of projects to her kids from scheduling things to planning a trip.

Ask their opinion on things a lot. Help them to see that failure is expected and not the end of the world.
