My 6 year old wrote his first ‘note’ to Dad today.  It read, “FumKai   kenoiwrkwifydad”.  Translated, “From Kai.  Can I work with you, Dad?”

It was cute, and I was encouraging about it, but it reminded me that i need to check with you all regarding how we handle such misspellings and issues such as spaces between words at this age.  The space thing will be adressed in this year’s curriculum.

I may be wrong… but this is what I think the CM way to handle this for a 6yo.

Don’t correct/critisize the child (we don’t want him to not want to write….)…

Note the words that are misspelled (in this case most of them…) – and at another time do some work on the word families the words came from – more in regards to reading rather than spelling….

So for instance, you might choose to work on “an” words….  so you might have him build with letters or letter tiles the word “man” – then have him change “man” to “can” (and several other words.)

And keep in mind that this type of spelling is normal at this age – especially for spontaniously written things, and it will improve.

One thing that has helped dd7 is working to make sure the whole family uses correct pronunciation. Then at least the phonetic words are easier to spell. ken-can or wif-with

    It’s a long road!

I would say copywork is the most helpful for him getting the ‘feel’ of how words look in a sentence and on a page. Since he obviously knows his letters, you could start him in the copywork books SCM offers, or use the free copywork you can find online. It does take some time, but he will get it!
