I know there are so many posts about this, but I did not know where to start, so I thought the easiest thing with a newborn in the house is to list out my questions, and hope someone can help me! 😀 DD, age 9 going into grade 4, is currently doing copywork. She has been working on cursive this year, and currently is working on copying poems, etc. Does copywork continue into grade 4, or does it usually stop? I found this year I am actually guilty of having her do too much written composition for history, etc, and found that she started getting very frustrated. After taking a breather when the baby came and reading some CM books to regroup, I found where I went wrong. Too much writing, not enough narration- oops. So moving into next year, what are everyones thoughts, and if copywork continues, how much printing vs cursive? She does not find cursive to be drudgery, if this matters at all? Thank you for all your help!

    Blessings,

Christina, I don’t have a great answer but I can tell you what my son who is going into 5th grade is doing. This past year his actual copywork was cursive, but any other writing that needed to be done like in literature, religion etc. they were done in printing. Now next year we are going to do this: we are going to do cursive for one thing, thing being like I might have him work on a bible verse or a poem or his written narration, but again that will only be one item a week that I will be working on getting this skill up and beautiful. The restof his work will be what he chooses. I am taking less pressure off his writing, because we are starting the typing program and I feel that in life typing will be very necessary and actually writing will be less. Everything runs on a computer now days so we are going to start wroking on that.

    Just giving you my thoughts

If she is still needing to master cursive I would make sure she is doing that for copywork. But, really it is up to you on which you want from her other subjects. Have you asked her which she prefers?

As for when copywork stops. That I find is different for each family. I will have mine continue through high school only because I find it to be of great benefit to write and study a passage of great quality. Others find that it causes more frustration than the benefits their child may receive from it.

Thank you for the thoughts! I like the idea of going through highschool, I can see that growing and changing with the child as they grow. DD has not “mastered” cursive but does extremely well. Both of you have given me some things to think about- thnak you! 😀
