My DH wanted our 4th grader to do some copywork in pen this year, so once a week she’s doing a copywork selection from English Lessons in Literature 3 in pen. They’re typically around 4 wide-ruled notebook lines in length. What should I do if she makes errors? Should she have to re-write the passage if she makes any errors, or is 1-2 errors semi-acceptable and it’s ok to just white-out that spot and rewrite it?

Up to you.  For us, the goal is paying attention to the passage well enough to copy it correctly, so we would rewrite the mistakes.  To help with that if you are doing pen have them write on every other line.  Then on the empty lines they have room for writing corrected words.

Or buy those really cool Frixion pens — they’re erasable and re-fillable!

My son is using pen this year too for the first time.  If he makes a mistake while writing, I have him make one line to strike through it.  I am also showing him ways he can fix his mistake, like turning an e into an i.  I do allow 1-2 mistakes so far, since pen is so new to him and I do not want it to frustrate him.  But he also skipped a whole line of words one day, so then he had to re-do it.

OK, sounds like I need to loosen up a little and not have expectations that are too high, and just have her rewrite the word that is messed up.

I bought the Frixion pen without realizing they were erasable and now my kids are hooked on them! Just ordered refills.

I just have my daughter cross out the incorrect word and rewrite it.  We correct as we go.
