I have just recently moved to Columbia, MD and am looking for others who follow CM in or near the Columbia area. Does anyone know of any individuals or groups?

I’ve been wondering this myself!!  Sorry, leah, we’re in the middle TN area.  It really is difficult to connect with other CMers.  It must be the “road less traveled”.  Frown

    Leah,

I live in Westminster, MD!!!  If you’re not sure where that is, I am about 40 minutes north of you, in Carroll County.  Our family’s best friends actually live in Columbia.  I am planning on using the CM method this coming year, and my mother in law who lives in PA is using it, as well.  Also, I attended a monthly meeting this last year with other mom’s going through Karen Andreaola’s book, “Simply Charlotte Mason.”  I believe that we are going to start it up again this fall.  It is in Littlestown, PA, which may be too far for you (probably about an hour), but is the closest thing that I know of you.

Hi Meagan! I’m so glad to know there’s someone out there not too far away! I’d love to be in a group going through Karen Andreola’s book or any other CM book for that matter! Yes, that group in PA sounds a bit far away for me, but hopefully I can find more CMers a little closer! Do your friends in Columbia homeschool? Since you are at least in the same state, maybe you can help me with another big question. We have to decide whether we will be under the supervision of the local school district or an umbrella group. I was hoping to find a CM umbrella or at least one that is a bit more CM friendly. What do you do? I would also like to find a CMer who is under the public school to find out how they do a portfolio that fulfills the requirements. Any ideas? Anyone?

Our friends in Columbia are actually my age (24) and don’t have any kids yet.  He is a youth pastor at South Columbia Baptist.  This is our first year homeschooling at our house and we are choosing to go under the school district.  I am not aware of any CM umberellas around here.  I’m not sure about the requirments for a portfolio.  I have a friend in PA who uses the CM method, who also used to work in MD, so I am going to try and get in touch with her to see what she has to say.  If I find anything out, I’ll let you know!!

What are the age(s) of your kid(s) and where are you moving here from?

We live VERY close to South Columbia Baptist (we can walk there)! My husband is also a youth pastor, at Hope Baptist in Laurel. My children are 9, 7, 4 1/2 and 21 months. We moved here from North Carolina. It is a great state for homeschooling. I’m sure MD will be great, too, I just have to figure out this whole portfolio thing. I’d be glad to have any advice I can get! You’ll have to let me know if you’re ever in the area!

    Leah-

I have a question for you (or anyone else who might be able to help).  When you moved up here to MD, what did you have to do to get them enrolled for homeschooling in MD?

I’m confused as to the process that I need to follow.  My children are currently enrolled in school in NY State, and will be with us this school year, and I don’t know what procedure I need to follow.  I have the forms to submit to my county, but I don’t know if I need to do anything different.

    Thanks!!

As far as enrolling them here, I think all you need to do is turn in that paperwork that you said you have. (I haven’t actually done that, but will be doing it soon.) I don’t know if you have to do anything special as far as withdrawing them from school in NY. I’ve never had to withdraw students from PS. Sorry I’m not much help! :o)
