Have any of you fine ladies started with module 1 for your first grader and simply continued with the history modules in chronological order?  I’ve been reading various opinions on whether to start ancient history with such a young child.

I’d be fine with starting module 5 (American history) for first grade, then continue with module 6 for second grade…and then I guess I’d then start at the beginning at module 1 after that.  Doing history in that order would put my son at module 1 (ancient history) by third grade instead of first.  I just wasn’t sure how it would all play out. ??

What have some of you done with the SCM history modules as far as the order you’ve taught?

    Thanks!

We have started at Module 5 by preference only.  My kids had already been studying Ancient Egypt for several months before we decided to take the plunge and do history the CM way.  They really did not want to do more Ancient Egypt right now and I was pretty done myself.  We were going to wait until the fall to begin, but I figured there was no point, so we started about March 1st or so.  We’ll probably exhaust a solid calendar year since the summer will be packed with other activities (we’ll still be reading, so we’ll see), plus we have the *family* reading to do for geography/Bible so that should take us a while.

I do know that each module will come around at least twice for each child (depending on how old they are, of course) and they will figure out the *order* themselves. If you use a time line that will help also.  We are also using the Book of Centurie.  I am looking for another time line for attaching figures for us asap, the one I have is just too big:) We’ll continue with the BOC, but they want to do figures, too.  HTH

Have you heard of “Homeschool in the Woods”?  They have timelines that look pretty nice.

Thank you for your input. 🙂

Yes, I have.  We are in the process of converting over the CM method with all our subjects so I’m making purchases as we go or as we need them.  I’d love to have EVERYTHING right now, but that doesn’t work with my personality.  Plus, after 4 years of hsing I have made *changes* over the years and found I/we did not like the change, so I wanted to do this the right way.  Slow, but sure.

We had been utilizing many of the resources from this site, but had not adopted the method completely. So needless to say, I’m super excited!

I started w/ AO, moved to HIFI and then to SCM by 2nd grade, but yes, I started 1st grade in ancient Egypt and am in ancient Rome now in 3rd grade. Next year I will be in Module 4 Middle Ages and my son who will be 1st grade will jump in there. Later my 2 youngest will jump in wherever we happen to be then in our 6 year rotation from SCM’s site.

I love it and it’s been great. I love that we will cover everything together.
