So I need some ideas this year – The ages i am looking for is 12 yr ds, 9 yr ds, and 2 girls which are almost 5 & 3.  Girls are new to me and I don’t want to buy something that’s going to get used twice and thrown to the side.

What are some time tested, lasts a long time items you have got for your kids be it Christmas, or birthdays?  Just to say, we don’t want lego’s have enough and no one is playing with them at this point.  I would LOVE some craft idea’s for winter or more inside idea’s to keep them busy through our long MN winters.

    Thanks

At Chirstmas we try to do the 4 present rule-

    Something you want

Something you need (with the little ones this is usually a more educational toy like puzzles, or a talking globe with geography information)

Something to wear- generally something more fun than the basics

Something to read- or for little ones audiobooks, or music

    Some ideas:

Play kitchen with food- we have had endless hours of cooking fun for years now.

    Babydolls and beds, clothes, etc.

    Wooden Blocks

    Puzzles

Coloring or craft sets. These are a huge hit!

Dress up clothes- usually I stock up on these at a childrens resale store, after halloween sale, or a thrift store. Think sequins and feather boas and tutus.

In California we don’t have to worry much about cold and snow, so we often do a bike, scooter, etc. In MN, you might think sled, or maybe if you have space an indoor trampoline. They have them with handlebars and enclosures for indoors as well as out.

I have nothing to add to curywhirly’s post (my girls are both teens now and it seems like a very long time ago that they were into “little girl” things), but I had to comment that I love the 4 Christmas rule and rhyme!  We may end up doing something like that this year…

Arts and craft materials.  My Emma loved a box full of misc. crafty things last year: pompoms, googly eyes, chenille pipe cleaners, foam sheets, felt, fabric, buttons, glue, glitter glue, etc.

An apron and kitchen tools to work with mommy.

Beading supplies with pony beads, not the teeny seed beads.  And a hint, pony beads are so much easier to string on pipe cleaners than string!

One year, we got our daughter the crochet DVD from SCM and a decorated chest from JoAnn Fabrics filled with the yarn, crocheting hooks etc. that she needed to do the projects.  This year, we are doing the same thing, but with the hand sewing DVD.

I have to agree with the post above – that play kitchen and play food, as well as dress up clothes, were things my daughter and neices never tired of. Years of play value! So get very durable items LOL. No cardboard food!
