I would like to buy or put together a songbook for each member of our family (plus a few extras) of favorite songs/hymns/carols for advent and Christmas. I want a wide collection.

I found this free resource –

    http://books.google.com/books?id=yYr2nNpfo6QC&pg=PR26&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=4#v=onepage&q&f=false

I’m wondering if the arrangements are good. I can sort of sing along if I’m familiar with the song, but that’s about it. I do not read music. I have 2 kids who play piano and would play along as they are able. Just wondering if this would be a good collection to choose to print from? I could order from musicnotes.com, but then I’m paying.

    Any help is appreciated.

I would say it depends on what exactly you’re looking for.  The arrangements are pretty much SATB (4 part) arrangements, like what you would find in a church hymnal. They look like good solid SATB arrangements.  If you’re looking for something where the pianist is playing more of an accompaniment rather than exactly what everyone is singing, then this probably isn’t what you’re wanting.  If you don’t want a separate accompaniment or if your kids are able to play chords by looking at a 4 part arrangement then this looks like a good resource.  You could always print one or two familiar carols off and see what your kids can do with them before you print more.
