I just got a book of 3 Charles Dickens Christmas stories.  A few years ago we read A Christmas Carol, but the other two are The Chimes and The Cricket on the Hearth.  Is anyone familiar with these other two?  I am wondering which of the other two would be a good read aloud for December.

I was also thinking of reading one of our Yesterday’s Classics Christmas books.  Can anyone recommend a good one?  They include Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, This Way to Christmas, The Christmas Porringer, Why the Chimes Ring, The Birds’ Christmas Carol, and Christmas in Legend and Story.

I know I can pre-read these, but I like reading them along with my DC.  Anyone have a good recommendation?

We haven’t read the other Dickens titles but I thought about one of them this year so I’ll be watching to see if anyone has anything to say.  We enjoyed Santa Claus, loved This Way to Christmas.  The Birds’ Christmas Carol is good but sad.  I haven’t read the others.

I love, love Christmas books.  I can’t wait to start this year.  I put some of our favorites here awhile back.

My oldest son will be reading The Cricket on the Hearth in a couple of months. Hope it’s good 🙂

I love Christmas books, too. I’ll have to check out these titles, thank you!

Read The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus by Amelia C. Houghton. It is one of the Yesterday’s Classics book you mentioned. It is such a lovely story. Be careful, though – there is another book of the same title by L. Frank Baum (Wizard of Oz author) and it is not the same story AT ALL. =)

We enjoyed The Birds Christmas Carol. It wasn’t what we expected, and it was sad, but it is still worth reading. It is fairly short too, which means that maybe you could read more. 😉

Thanks for sharing!  This narrows things down a bit.  Maybe we can read The Birds Christmas Carol early on, and follow it up with something happier.  lol

I’m not sure about the Santa book.  He doesn’t visit our house, 😉  so I’m not sure if it’d be a good choice for us.  However, my DC might enjoy the book anyway.  I’ll take another look at This Way to Christmas as well.

I imagine we could fit in a YC book as well as one of the Dickens’ books since they are fairly short.

My3boys, I imagine by the time your DS reads A Cricken on the Hearth, it will be too late for a recommendation.  lol  I hope he enjoys it!  I’m leaning toward choosing it, but that’s mainly because it’s the only title I’m already familiar with…I have no idea what either story is about!
