Christian Liberty Nature Readers Stand alone as Science for 1st-3rd grades

    I’m interested in going through the Christian Liberty Nature Readers with my children, and doing nature study along with those. Would they work as a stand alone Science for 1st-3rd grade?

    I think it would work great, especially if you could find the things you were reading about in the Nature Readers. 🙂 That would make a very enjoyable elementary science.

    My children read these.  I asked for oral narrations rather than requiring answers to the questions in the books.  Along with regular nature study, I think it is enough for 1st – 3rd grade.

    I do recommend the SCM Outdoor Secrets and companion books at some point during those three years, too.  We really enjoyed it and used the books again.  My children like to look at animal and insect books in their free time too.  I read aloud nature books in our story rotation.  We enjoyed Among the … People written in 1901 by Clara Dillingham Pierson.  They are free ebooks.  These were just extra and not scheduled.  They are not necessary, but enjoyable if you have the time.

    I think I will plan Outdoor secrets for the following year then. I wasn’t sure if my son would like it or not. Also was looking at Pond and Stream. We’ve been reading a lot of the Burgess Books my children beg me for them but I too am hoping to read Among the…people to my children as well. I started one but they really wanted to keep reading Burgess so we put it to the side.

    Piggybacking, if I may:

    Does anyone know if the People of the… series references evolution and “Mother Nature” like the Burgess books (Animals in particular)?

    We’ve started the Animals and yes, there is a whole lot of Mother Nature so far. I simply sub with any of God’s names.

    It has been years since I read the Among the People series, but I don’t recall any such references as some of the Burgess books have.  We did enjoy the Burgess Bird book and the Burgess Seashore book.  I plan to read the Burgess Flower book this spring.  But we will not read Mother West Wind nor The Burgess Animal Book due to the heavy references to mother nature/evolution.

    I am also considering Nature Parables.
