I am wondering how you have all done character study as a family? My kids ages are so spread out there now and for some reason I’m at a loss how to do it this coming year. We have done a scripture verse with a charater trait that goes with it for 3 years. Its getting old and I have lost the kids interest I have found this year. (15-3yrs)
I need to spice it up and change things around. I would like something that we could do once a week. The trait could last for that one week or for longer, I’m open to that end.
What are you doing?
missceegeeParticipantBooks! Good books!
Little Britches series by Ralph Moody
Hedge of Thorns
The Chestry Oak
Ishmael by ALOE for older ones
My early elem kids read Polite Moments by Gary Maldaner.
I find that reading about stories has a much greater impact on my kids. I have many more but I need to run at the moment.
MistyParticipantWell thanks I will look into those. Great keep it coming I would much rather do that than keep drilling ‘fact’ type stuff. I will look into the Ishmael one as it would be good to get the older ones interested right away. We just finished up Little Britches which I loved the kids were so so with it.
HollySParticipantWe’re using LDTR for Children. There is a variety of activities and readings that it should keep all your DC interested. My oldest is only 11 though, so maybe you’d need more for the older ones?
We are also using Roar! A Christian Family Guide to go along with Narnia books for our literature study. I didn’t think about this being character, but there are some great character questions and Bible verses for each chapter.
AFthfulJrneyParticipantThis is a great thread! Love the book suggestions! Will look into them to use with my DC as well!
Holly…what is LDTR? 🙂
cherylramirezParticipantLaying Down the Rails – a habit training book sold in the bookstore here.
waynesweakervesselParticipantWe don’t “do” character study per say. We just read a lot of books with characters that do right. If they are well written stories they appeal to ANY age – they even make mom think 🙂
Here are some examples:
An American Book of Golden Deeds by James Baldwin
Tiger and Tom and Other Stories for Boys
The King’s Daughter and Other Stories for Girls
MistyParticipantLooking them up from our library. Keep the good books coming. I love the idea!!
ClaireParticipantWe use Plutarch’s Lives for our Character Study. It’s amazing how much is packed in to each life … so many characters that have every imaginable issue and conflict and resolution and cause/effect … it works for us. We also seem to pick up threads of character study in our other lessons – biographies, Shakespeare, etc.
AFthfulJrneyParticipantHolly…do you have the LDTR handbook, or just the companion? Also, what ages are you using ROAR! with? I’ve never heard of that before and it’s got me very interested!
greenebaltsParticipantYup, Laying Down the Rails along with reading good books and missionary biographies.
Also, Beautiful Feet publishes a wonderful study for character books. The guide is approx. $15.
