I saw at WTM board that you use Systematic math, I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about it.  I’m looking specifically at using the math rescue for an older student.  Thanks

    Hi!

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I like this program. My son was not doing well with most math programs we have tried. He likes things broken down in small pieces and most things moved too fast for him.  He always did well when I sat by him, but he could never go off and do a lesson in anything by himself and “get it”. All that has changed with Systematic Mathematics.  He goes and watches the dvd, does the lesson, and usually gets 100% right. He had one problem wrong today and that was the first this week. The teacher assumes no prior knowledge and has a very unique way of making things make sense. I couldn’t be happier. It saves me time and energy and he is learning so much and so quickly. He is in module 6 and I already own all the other modules through AL 2.

I am excited to have found something that teaches without me having to be intimately involved in the process. We used Teaching Textbooks and MUS before this, and while they are great programs, nothing has come close to the detail this program provides. I love it. Laughing

Each dvd lesson takes about 30 minutes and the lessons have about 15 problems to complete after that. The answer key doesn’t work out the problems, just the answers, but that hasn’t been a problem yet for us. I also have heard the Mr. Zeigler is quite easy to reach and get help from if you need it.

Forgive me for jumping in here – but Caroline, I was wondering what ages you use this program for. I have a 13 yo ds that is heading into Pre-Algebra (currently using TT) and seems to have some cracks in his foundation.  I’m considering this, as it might help him before moving any further in math. Thanks.

I think the math rescue program is made just for crack fixing. 🙂  Module 7 of Systematic Mathematics is the pre-AL course too. I believe the Math Rescue is a stand-alone course that moves a little quicker through all the concepts in order to lay down a solid foundation and get up to speed before or during algebra.

All of the modules have the final test and answers for you to look at beneath the description. If the test is easy then move to the next test. I like that he puts the final tests up there so you can really see where each module is heading.

Hi, I’ve been eavesdropping on this discussion. I went to the Systematic website. I’m almost finished with a Kindergarten math workbook from Horizon. Teaching math terrifies me more than almost anything, so when I saw this method had a DVD, my curiosity was peaked. I noticed that the K-2nd Math curricula all comes together for $23. I find it really hard to believe that for $23 I can get 3 years’ worth of math curriculum. What grade levels have you ordered, and was it really all there? Was there anything hidden that you had to buy later?

I have not used the k-2 dvds yet, but I would be curious how they work too. From 3rd on I have been EXTREMELY happy with the Systemath products.

Does the 3rd grad book teach you how to teach them?  The samples of the book don’t look like they have any teaching qualities about them.  I can’t teach without a lot of help.  What have you been happly with specifically?  I have one in 3rd that understands math, it just takes him HOURS to accomplish what would takes others 20 minutes.

    Hello,

I did not see any samples of the Practical Arithmetic Book 1 on the site–can you tell me what the samples looked like? We may be looking at two different things.   The book that Systemath recommends for 3rd is an old fashioned text book (red). I love it because it breaks down each concept into tiny pieces and works slowly and incrementally. The focus on mental math has been great for us too along with many word problems to practice.

Oh, and I only do part of each lesson. If they get a couple correct, I move on. Laughing

Thank you, Des, for posting this question, I have also been “eavesdropping on this discussion” and went to the website to check it out.  Even though we have selected a math program for this fall DH and I are both interested in Systemath after reading the website.

Thank you, Caroline, for your input. We will probably go ahead and order the Practical Arithmetic Book 1.  I was able to see inside the book at CBD.  It looks clear and simple yet covering all the bases. You really seem to have a relaxed approach to math yet make sure your child learns (“I only do part of each lesson. If they get a couple correct, I move on.”)Wink

It was at CBD that I looked at the sample as well.
