  • I was if you  know of any living books that speaks tells about butterflies? She is older and I need to start nature study through butterflies…then to flowers….then to birds. She is 12. I’m not looking for a book that talks about “all” nature in general. I need to start through the back door per se first.

    Thanks

A good book on Monarch butterflies is An Extraordinary Life: The Story of a Monarch Butterfly by Laurence Pringle. The text is engaging and the illustrations are wonderful. It tells the story of the life cycle of the Monarch, including the migration to Mexico. There is a section at the end of the book about saving the butterflies habitat in the tropics, but that can be easily skipped if yoy prefer. The book is out of print, though, so you will have to see if you can get a copy from the library. There are several people on Amazon selling used copies for about $20, also.

I just downloaded a pretty book from gutenberg.org called Butterflies Worth Knowing by Clarence Weed (copyright 1917). It has forty color plates of butterfly illustrations along with descriptions.

I have a delightful little book aimed at adults but very readable called An Obsession with Butterflies by Sharman Apt Russell; I enjoyed it very much.

I’m so happy to read this post. I’m pretty sure ‘An Extraordinary Life: The Story of a Monarch Butterfly’ is the book I’ve been looking for for YEARS now. I read it with my oldest about 10 years ago and then never saw it again in the library. It was a book that left a huge impression on me and I’ve been inspired to use it as a year-long course on the Monarchs with my little ones. Actually one of my life dreams is to be in Mexico at the beginning of November so I can see this amazing occurance…because of this book! I’m crossing my fingers this book is the one I read so long ago and am ordering it now. Amazon has them new for $20-ish and used for $5-ish.

Had to share that I just found An Extraordinary Life at a library book sale for .50! I knew I had seen this title somewhere and, of course, it was on this forum. What a beautiful book.
