Regarding Jim Kjelgaard’s books: Big Red is the first book of a three book series. The other two books, Irish Red and Outlaw Red, can be read in any order. Kjelgaard wrote many books and most of them are stand alones. Most of his books are out of print, but you can usually find some at the library.

My boys like the Chuck Black series and the Redwall books as well. Also “Little Britches” by Ralph Moody was one of our favorite read-alouds. He has written many other books also.
One of our current favorite authors is Piet Prins. We haven’t found any of his books at the library, but we have been able to purchase them inexpensively on-line. Mostly we do these as read-alouds because the whole family loves them, including our 6 and 7 yo dd. He has a series set in The Netherlands during WWII, another series set in Australia, another series about a dog… We have just finished a book about an Eskimo boy. I cannot recommend this author highly enough!
Right now we’re reading “Hittite Warrior” by Joanne Williamson and my boys (13, 12 and 10) are loving that one as well!

My boys love these books about animals and adventure:
Ernest Thompson Seton animal books (Wild Animals I have Known, Wild Animal Ways, Monarch the Big Bear etc.)
Jim Kjelgaard’s books as previously mentioned
Call of the Wild
Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, Around the World in Eighty Days, and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
South by Sir Shackleton (my boys love reading this…my ds7 loves it on audio) about Shackleton’s expedition to the Antarctic, losing his ship Endurance, but saving all of his men
Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped
The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring Trilogy

Echoing jeaninpa…Little Britches series by Ralph Moody is an all time family favorite.

Can someone comment on the Ralph Moody series? I’ve heard that it’s a bit rough. But what does that mean? I want to listen to it for our read aloud (audio car) literature. Would it be ok?

We’ve finished the first 3 and they are terrific IMO. The first 2 had some “coarse” cowboy language that was easily edited as I read aloud. The 3rd we listened to on audio and it was very well done with less language.
These stories have and continue to have a big impact on my kids, ESP. ds7. He identifies with Ralph and his desire to grow into a man of character as well as his struggles.
We plan to read or listen to the 4th soon.

I have one son, who loved the Jules Vernes books. He is into science and science fiction. My other son who loves natures and animals loved Where The Red Fern Grows. I enjoyed that book myself. When my second son who loves nature was about 12 he wasn’t much for reading other than Hunting magazines. Then I started buying him the D.J. Dillon Adventure Series by Lee Roddy. He anticipated each year the next 3 or 4 books I would buy him. He really took to reading with these books. These books are about a boy and his adventures with animals. They also have good moral lessons. I guess that is another reason I was glad he enjoyed these books. There are 10 books in the series so far.

(Little Britches) Same experience here as Christie’s–a few words in the first two books, so we read those aloud, but these books are TOO GOOD TO MISS. Don’t let that scare you away from these fabulous books.

This may be a bit too easy for him, but our boys are enjoying The Sign of the Beaver, based on a true story of Indians helping a 13 yr old boy while he waits and tends the cabin/fields for his father to return with the rest of the family.

We loved Sign of the Beaver too! And DH reads the Little Britches series aloud, and everyone enjoys it.

My son is only 9, but a few of his favorites are Stone Fox, My Father’s Dragon, and he just finished Brighty of the Grand Canyon, and won’t stop talking about it…wants me to get it on audio so his 7 yr old brother can hear it (there’s also a movie, we learned through our audio search).

I didn’t read all the suggestions…but did anyone mention Narnia? 12 would probably be a great age for those.

I asked my son what were some of his favorite books and he was glad to give me a list. He is currently reading “Diary of a Wimpy kids series” I was a little worried at first to let them read some of the things at the library. However, it has helped him read better. I ask the librarian about some of the details of the books. sometimes they are good at telling me if they are worthy of a “G” rating. 🙂 I noticed that he was drawlin’ into reading comic strip type of books. This was a good idea because he had to read sequencal. 🙂 There were books that he suggested. Starting with his favorite hero Batman. He loves Hank the cowdog series. Magic School buses, Lego magazines and books,(go to lego.com call and get the number to become a member. They will send you a free magazine every month.) he loves these magazines. The 39 clues, The magic treehouse, My other son likes Scooby-Doo, and How to train your dragon series. He also likes the Magic Treehouse series. I would say that they are reading above their level. I was worried that they wouldn’t ever like getting into reading as much as I like it. After he spent sometime in the older childrens section he picked out books that I thought he would have a hard time reading. However, he just asked me more questions. What the words meant or what they were. This was great because he was increasing his vocabulary without even knowing it. 🙂 He got to read the books he wanted to and he has learned so much. Just let him loose in the library. LOL Who would have thought of this idea! Bahaha.
