I am planning to do a series this summer on sewing with an 8, 5, 4 and 3 year old from a blog post someone posted on this forum:

My question is can you recommend any books for this age range that might go along with the following character traits that we could read on the same day we do those activities:

    Patience

    Focus

    Persistence

    Thoughtfulness

    Kindness

I just ordered this book, on the recommendation of Money Saving Mom (Crystal Paine).  I’m really looking forward to starting it with my children, and it covers a few of the traits on your list.

The Book of Virtues by William J Bennett is wonderful to read, our whole family enjoys it. There’s also a few other books, and some are geared toward young children. The sections are divided according to virtues.

I haven’t read the crossroads of character but the author spoke at the last conference I went to. She is just amazing. They have a few books, one is on Christian bookstore that I am considering getting.

We really love the Miller Family books.  My friend, Kris Hage, actually wrote the Character Companion that goes with the books.  She lists the following stories for the traits you listed:

Patience:  Missionary Stories chp. 3 and 6
Focus:  none specifically but here are stories for alert or attentive
    Persistence:  Missionary Stories chp. 23, 24, 25
Thoughtfulness:  Prudence and the Millers chp. 15, Wisdom and the Millers chp. 16
Kindness:  School Days with the Millers chp 8 and 15, Wisdom and the Millers chp 7 and 8

We have been doing BFB’s Character Throgh Lit, and I have enjoyed Boys and Girls of Colonial Days by Carolyn Bailey very much. It has stories in it to meet all those character traits. Persistence, we read, Brave Irene by William Steig, loved it! Actually, I have had brilliant discussions after all the readings from that pack. Very glad I purchased it, will be using it again.
