I came across this and thought some of you language enthusiasts may enjoy it for your middle to upper graders, as well as yourselves. It also touches on why the english language was so important regarding the Bible’s ability to be translated into English so so many could read it for themselves.

It’s called “King ALfred’s English: A History of the Language we speak and why we should be glad we do.”

I haven’t read it, but am interested; but I trust the website where I found it in their types of books they sell.

Looks like fun, Rachel.  I’m doing a course on linguistics and the history of English with my high schoolers, maybe my 10yo would like this.

If anyone is interested in upper-level history of language books, I can recommend a few.  For some reason, many of the history of English type books contain extended sections on profanity, sigh.  We have unfortunately found most of those–it’s now a requirement to have Mom preread all these types of books.  🙂

I figured of all people, you would be intrigued.

Also, being familiar with this company, I’d be surprised if that type of content exists in this book.

It’s on my ‘future purchases’ list.

Ellen McHenry’s Excavating English looks pretty good….Laughing  The site says it’s for ages 10-15.
