    Hi all

Can you share what, if anything, you have used the book of mottoes idea for? As mentioned in another post my kids all had very poor writing – just plain messy! I have a cursive book which is great but my daughter is 11 and I am thinking she needs a bit more inspiration. My idea is to let her choose a nice journal/copybook in whatever size she wants and then each week have her choose a favorite quote, be it from movie, book, whatever source, and write it out. My thought is that she will start out pretty messy but then improve rapidly and hopefully having a nice book to write in will motivate her to do her best. My fear is that she will be afraid to try as she knows her writing is messy. I try to tell her that all her older siblings were the same but she is a bit doubtful….any advise? I also thought I would start one too, for me. I love gathering quotes and as a scrapbooker I can always use them, perhaps it can be something we do together?

What you are describing is similar to what I have done with my girls who are 16, 14, and 10.  They each have a nice, special journal for their book of mottos.  I allow them to choose whatever they would like to include in it.  I also make some suggestions to add in addition to the entries they choose themselves – sometimes they add my suggestions, sometimes not.  It is their choice.Smile  They seem to enjoy this a great deal, and dd 16 has referred to her BoM upon several occasions.

When copywork or BOM is not a habit – yet….. how do you get it started so that it doesn’t end up as a great idea yet again forgotten.  I’m having trouble implementing needed educational habits.  Help!  My dk’s are 10 and 8

My plan ( and my hope) is that as dd has freedom to choose her own entries, she will be motivated to keep it up on her own. I will schedule it in to the plan ( gotta love that planner!) but she can move it if she needs to to any of her independent blocks. Right now she is loving watching and listening to some old Disney videos and she is writing the lyrics to bits of her favorite songs onto her computer. So I think I can use that as a jumping point and she can write lyrics, poems, quotes, whatever. But I agree, in the busyness of life it will be hard to force- hopefully I don’t have to, that would defeat the purpose for me I think..
