my son is having a difficult time with the Bible doctrine. Can someone explain how it works i may be explaining it wrong to him. I understand that he is suppose to write about what he learns. Can someone give some suggestions?

Secondly I feel like we arn’t doing enough through out the day.

I have only studied doctrine for a brief time so far so I am currently learning using Sonya’s Life in the Word bible Study resource.

I am struggling with it also, so my pastor recommended the book A Summary of Christian Doctrine by Louis Berkhof.

How old is your son and are you using a particular SCM book for the basis of your study?

    Hope this helps.

May I humbly suggest that you both read The Untold Story of the New Testament Church by Frank Viola? My husband and I are finishing up this book, and we understand the NT better now than we ever have. This probably wouldn’t be a good read for a younger student, but it would be excellent for years 9-12. It gives historical and background information surrounding each of the books of the NT, why they were written (especially Paul’s letters), and instructs you to read the entire NT chronologically, not in the current canon order. Very, very eye-opening. Reading the NT with these eyes has shown dh and me that we should not be taking individual scriptures out to prove or disprove a point–this is called proof-texting, and it’s what most Christians do when establishing their own beliefs, or doctrine, on a particular point. It may help you both out as you struggle to form your own doctrine and instruct your children in forming theirs.

    I hope this is helpful!

    jrs5kids,

Just to clarify, are you referring to your son not understanding doctrine in general?  Or are you asking about the Discovering Doctrine Bible Study by SCM?  If the latter, here is a post where Sonya talks a little about how they do it in their house.

First, what age is your son :-). That would help greatly.

Second, do you know how FBI agents are trained to spot a counterfeit bill? They study the real thing, and then they know by their familiarity with it when a counterfeit crosses their path.

In other words, teach the Bible, from the Bible. There is nothing – no teaching from man – that will teach you or your children how to interpret God’s word like the book itself. Start early, and spend lots and lots of time in it!

It is the only tool God has ordained for ‘dividing soul and spirit’.

Time spent with God, in his word, is the remedy for confusion.

I would recommend the assistance of some good catechism, particularly the following:

    • For younger children: GPC’s First Catechism, which you can find in the list here, is a great set of simple Q&A’s that children can learn and memorize. We’ve been going through these (approx 5/day) since our children were 3 or 4 (they are now 8 & 6), and even as an adult I find the reminders always helpful.
    • For those of any age, the New City Catechism is a good, modern set of Q&A’s that pull from various historic Reformed catechisms and confessions.
    • For some of the historic catechisms and confessions within the Church, reformed.org is a great resource. It includes documents like the Westminster Shorter and Larger catechisms, the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Heidelberg catechism, etc. Most of these include Scripture proof texts for detailed further study.

All of the documents referenced above seek to summarize the doctrines found in Scripture, and they follow the principle of sola Scriptura.

My son is 15 years old. We were under the assumtion that when he read his Bible he was suppose to write in the Bible doctrin. BUt the only place he has written anything is under the God section. IS this correct?

Another question, when do I start my soon to be 6 year old in more than reading books and handwriting? Out of all my children she loves to read. I just don’t want her to be overwelmed. I am so relaxed with her and my 8 soon to be nine daughter. When do I get intense? I found for my 8 yr old daughter that the Primary LL is to hard. Her reading level isnt great yet. I push for her to read but she bucks me on it all the time. She is reading the More days go by series of books right now.

Where is your 15yo reading in the Bible? Maybe I could take a look and give some examples or suggestions to help him.
