Wow! I just got the Proverbs study and it is great! I love how it doesn’t tell us what we should be thinking, but lets us find out for ourselves. This study really will take some work for my 7th and 8th graders to do.
I am also looking into getting Discovering Doctrine. How are your children doing with this one? I know you are to use it ongoing for about 6 years. Is it hard for your children to keep up with both? How much time do you estimate I should put aside for both of these studies?
Glad you like the Proverbs study, Missy. It will take probably 10-20 minutes each day — enough time for your child to read the chapter in Proverbs and record his findings on the month’s topic. If he finds a lot of verses relating to the topic, it will take a little longer than days that he finds only one or two verses to record.
Discovering Doctrine is much more sporadic. We don’t really set aside a certain time each day to do it. It’s just whenever we find a doctrinal truth in our reading (whether school Bible reading, personal devotions, sermon, family devotions, whenever), we say, “Oh, that would be a good one to record in our Discovering Doctrine notebook.” And we go do that.
Right now we’re reading in Exodus for school work, so we’re not finding a lot of doctrinal truths to record. We’ve found a few truths about God (Theology Proper) but it hasn’t been an everyday occurrence. Now, previously, when we were reading in the epistles, we were recording a lot of truths every day. On those days, we would bring our DD notebook to our reading time because we knew we would need it.
My daughter has a Discovering Doctrine journal. The only time it gets written in is when we are doing other SCM Bible studies and there is a reminder that the text of the day contains truths to be applied to one of the areas of doctrine.
We did the Hebrews Bible study in 7th grade and loved it! I bought the Romans study for this year and it is a great study, but I think it is better suited to independent study in high school. I wish I would have gone with the Proverbs study. I will probably order it in the near future. Right now, we are continuing with the Romans study but we are doing it together, orally and in a very simplified manner. Romans is such a meaty book anyway. I think I’ll save this study and hand it to my daughter around 10th grade and have her work through it as written and independently.
