I am new to cm method (brand new). I am trying to schedule my soon to be highschooler and am trying to figure out what to use for science the cm way. She wants to be a veternarian and so needs a strong background in science, biology, and math. I have 2 daughters that are going into the 8th and 9th grades (one on the path to being a vet. the other journalist) and a daughter that is around the 3rd grade and two boys pre-k and kinder ages.

    Hi,

For you circumstance, you may want to consider the Apologia. Your daughter will get a very thorough grounding in the subjects that she needs.

Just fyi: I had a student that was anxious to get into the biology area versus the physical science (which comes first in the series). I asked Dr. Wile and he said the reason physical comes first is simply that the biology is harder. There is no math prereq. for biology. As a ninth grader, she did fine. Also, the general science is not necessary either; it is a great intro to the different areas of science and is good to get going on so that the student understands Dr. Wile’s methodology.

Another thing you may consider is asking a local vet to allow your daughter to do some workstudy with their office.

As for other books to look at, Masterbooks.net has some excellent choices.

This is our experience thus far; I’m sure other moms will have lots of suggestions for you.

    Blessings,

Hi, I have a son who will be “9th grade” next year and he also wants to be a vet. I am beginning him in Apologia Biology and he’ll continue on with their Chemistry, Physics and then probably one of the two biology electives. It is a good solid program with high school level labwork.

I also will have my son work with a local vet, although all the vets here are “cat and dog” or farm animal guys, and my son wants to do exotics.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you were close enough to co-op the Apologia with us. LOL
