  • Hello there,

I’m Kyla, wife and mother of three kids, almost 4, 2, and six months. We recently started having come issues with my son’s preschool (communication issues) and my husband and I decided to homeschool. It’s been in the works since my son was a baby but, I never thought I was cut out to do it. At this point, I have found that it really is the best thing for my children. I heard about the Charlotte Mason homeschooling through a friend who is beginning it as well. I am having trouble figuring out where to start. I was public schooled my whole life and my husband was home-schooled – he is so much smarter than I am!! 🙂 Anyway I am hoping to find some good information and maybe some snazy ideas on how to stay organized and structured. I’m a little nervous that I will simply be doing a disservice to my children by not being cut out to teach, so I am going to try and do my best. I feel like starting at home is the best possible situation for them where they can learn morals and values at their roots. Thanks for the help and I look forward to getting to know many of you.

    Sincerely,

    Kyla Festerly

I can’t recommend enough the All-Day Seminar and Planning your CM education DVD’s available from this site. They make CM very user friendly. 🙂

Kyla,   I agree with caroline. . . .!   It would be so helpful to start fresh from the beginning and Sonya is such a great and relaxed teacher.

While you are learning the CM way, my suggestion is to enjoy your kids and have fun learning abc’s and counting out your cheerios at breakfast, and learning scripture with lots of fun motions.!!!!

Have fun exploring and learning with your kids. . .  I do!

    Hi Kyla and welcome!

You are right in saying that homeschooling your children will help instill values and morals.  I have 4 right now and am going on 7 yrs of homeschooling.  I can tell you that many have complimented me on the great manners of my children, esp. in dealing with various age groups.  In observing other kids their age who are not homeschooled, there is a stark difference.

In getting started, Sonya’s DVD’s and Book or even just the book would be a great help.  I bought it this spring just to help me reorganize another year.  There are many resources you can read and use.  I’ll list some of my favorites just in case you aren’t aware of all of them.  The Charlotte Mason Companion is a book by Karen Andreola that is a fabulous read.  Then there are the books and audios by Catherine Levison which are very informative too.  Of course there are the volumes that Charlotte Mason wrote, but I prefer the Modern English versions.  These are available through http://www.lulu.com and you can type in the search Home Education in Modern English and the volumes will come up.  I found these to be a lot easier to digest and read.

There are some sites which are helpful too.  Of course, this site; but also http://www.amblesideonline.com  http://www.livingbookscurriculum.com  and http://materamabilis.org/ma/

I agree…The All Day Seminar and Planning Your CM Education are resources that I wish I’d had at the beginning of our homeschool experience.  Thankfully, God restores what the locusts eat Laughing;  but you have the awesome opportunity of starting at the beginning, and as Christy stated, Sonya is such a relaxed teacher.

Enjoy the wonderful blessings God has entrusted to you!!
