I have been looking thru the archives on the subject of history. I did purchase Truthquest which I indeed like very much and was a minimal investment. i was thinking of purhcasing the D’Aulaire books on Beautiful feet- even though we have already read G. Washington and B Franklin- i love the books. The entire early American History set caught my eye and wondered if anyone had purchased that entire set and what they thought? the D’aulaire books are $100 and the whole set is $195 ish.. (the Star Spangle banner which is part of the D’aulaire set is not in the Early Am History primary set however.) I am just looking for some ‘scaffolding’ for next year for myself! As I look thru TQ I get overwhelmed w/ the choices but i can see where I would use it to supplement as we go along. We started SOTW last year and it was too ‘graphic’ for my almost 8 yo who is also special needs. I want him to focus on the ‘pure and lovely’ for a bit longer. So has anyone purchased the entire set? The ‘literature pack’ is also an option. here is a link to that page. thanks for any input

    Hi Amy,

We’ve been using this set for years (15 to be exact!). We have used it in many different ways; sometimes complete as is (with the study guide), or sometimes just reading/narrating, and anything in between. We’ve enjoyed the books every time.

    Blessings,

The D’aulaire books are definitively worth the investment. I do not know about the BF study guides as I do not have those but the books are worth every penny.

We used it last year and my DD’s loved it! They still pull out some of the books to re-read (especially this week). The books are easy to locate if you’d rather not purchase them, I got most at yard sales, curriculum swaps or http://www.paperbackswap.com. It is a delightful program, easy to follow. You’re making a history “journal” as you go along and those journals are a delight for us to go through over and over. Hence, my introduction to notebooking…LOVE IT!

so do ya’ll think the curriculum itself is worth it? or mostly just the books then? i have been able to get almost all the D’aulaire books thru inner library loan- but get nervous because we love on the books quite a bit LOL! so i need to at the very least purchase the books- just wondering about the rest of the curric? the guide etc..

    Amy,

I cannot answer the question about the guides. I think it would really depend on how you plan on using them. Are you going to just use the books as they are spelled out in the SCM guides or are you wanting to do American history following the plans laid out in the BF guides? If you are planning on following SCM then I would not think it is necessary to buy the BF guides.
